Michigan Governor: Businesses Must Refuse Maskless Service

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) on Friday signed an executive order requiring all state residents to wear masks in indoor public spaces to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

“The heroes on the front lines of this crisis have spent hours without removing their masks every day – doctors, nurses, babysitters, grocers. We owe it to them to wear our masks when we are traveling to the grocery store or the pharmacy, ”Whitmer said in a statement. She added, “Masks can reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 by about 70%. By wearing masks, we can save lives and protect our family, friends and neighbors from the spread of COVID-19. ”

The new ordinance, which comes into force on Monday, obliges companies to refuse anyone without a mask. Michigan residents can be fined $ 500 for willfully ignoring the order, but cannot be arrested or imprisoned.

Whitmer noted that “each region of Michigan has seen a slight increase in new cases, and the number of daily cases now exceeds 20 cases per million in the Grand Rapids, Detroit and Lansing regions. ”

Michigan is only the last state to require people to wear masks in public. The majority of states have seen a resurgence of COVID-19 in recent weeks, forcing some like Texas and Florida to reimpose certain economic restrictions to fight the virus.
