Mexico: 24 the dead in the attack on a rehabilitation centre for drug addicts

Gunmen burst into a drug rehabilitation center which is not registered in the center of Mexico, and opened fire Wednesday, killing 24 people dead and 7 wounded, according to authorities. The police of the State in the centre-north of Guanajuato stated that the attack had occurred in the city of Irapuato. Three of the seven injured were reported in serious condition.

Apparently, the assailants shot all over the world at the rehabilitation center. The State police said that nobody had been removed. Photos purportedly show the scene suggest that those in the centre were lying when they were sprayed with bullets.

Guanajuato was the theatre of a bloody battle between the cartel of Jalisco and a local gang, and the State has become the most violent of Mexico.

No reason was given at the time of the attack, but the governor Diego Sinhue Rodriguez Vallejo said that a gang of drug seemed to have been involved.

“I deeply regrets and condemns the events of Irapuato this afternoon,” wrote Sinhue. “The violence generated by organized crime not only takes the lives of young people, but it deprives the families of Guanajuato in peace. “

The earlier attacks against centers of rehabilitation

In the past, gangs of mexican drug killed the resellers alleged street-level rival gangs seeking refuge in such facilities. It is one of the attacks, the deadliest against a rehabilitation centre since 19 people were killed in 2010 in the city of Chihuahua, in northern Mexico. More than a dozen attacks against such facilities have taken place since then.

Mexico has long-standing problems with the rehabilitation centres because most are private, under-funded and often commit abuses against drug users in recovery. The government spends relatively little money for the rehabilitation, often in the centres not registered, the only option available to poor families.

In addition, the addicts and the dealers who are the face of attacks from rivals in the street to take refuge sometimes in rehabilitation clinics, making clinics themselves the target of attacks. Other gangs have been accused of having forcibly recruited drug addicts recovering in the centres, such as resellers and have them killed if they refused.
