Robert Pattinson’s Batman hasn’t even finished filming yet but his world is already expanding. Director Matt Reeves and Sopranos producer Terrence Winter teams up to do police proceedings in Gotham City on HBO Max which takes place in the same universe like the upcoming movie.
Although the show is currently untitled, some call it Gotham Central, a reference to the comic book series of the same name by Greg Rucka, Ed Brubaker, Stefano Gaudiano and Michael Clark. Whatever it ends up being called, the show has a direct serial engagement so there is little danger that it won’t air, with Winter Writing and Reeves himself producing.
In a press release, HBO Max describes the show as being based on “the cinematic examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, ultimately launching a new Batman universe on multiple platforms. The series offers an unprecedented opportunity to expand the world established in the film and to further explore the myriad of fascinating and complex characters from Gotham. “
Because the show takes place in the same universe as The Batman there is a chance Jeffrey Wright could appear as the Gordon Commission, or perhaps even Pattinson as Batman, but neither has been confirmed, and casting has not yet started.
“This is an incredible opportunity, not only to broaden the vision of the world I create in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a long format can afford,” said Matt Reeves in a press release. “And getting to work with the talented Terence Winter, who has written with insight and power on the worlds of crime and corruption, is an absolute dream.”
“Our collaboration with Warner Bros. and DC allows us to build and develop fan connections across these powerful brands for years to come, ”added Kevin Reilly, content director of HBO Max. “It’s Batman like most audiences have never seen before and we know fans will want to spend more time in this new world inspired by the film. “
Now, unell that said…. walors that it’s very easy to get excited about a new Batman show and the expansion of the DC universe and all that, maybe HBO should have looked out of its window. Is it really time to do another show glorifying the police? In 2020? With people who flood the streets to protest police brutality? Don’t we already have enough cops? It’s a curious moment for a show of this nature, to say the least.
Nevertheless, it is encouraging that Warner Bros. have that kind of confidence in Reeves’ film and vision. And, as shown Gotham have proven, Batman’s hometown is ripe for compelling storytelling … although we doubt this latest take will get as wild as this last attempt at a Batman cop show.
The Batman is currently scheduled for October 1, 2021.
