Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said he could not leave Mason Greenwood out of the squad after the teenager scored for the third consecutive Premier League match.
The 18-year-old English forward brought his campaign total to 16 by winning United’s 3-0 victory at Aston Villa.
Only George Best, Brian Kidd and Wayne Rooney – all with 17 – have scored more teens in a season for United.
Solskjaer said “it’s up to him [Greenwood] how far he wants to go. “
Academy product Greenwood has shown during its breakthrough season why it is so highly rated at the club, demonstrating its pace, skill and ability to finish with either foot.
His goal against Villa was crushed 20 yards from the right foot as he became the fourth player aged 18 and under to score in three consecutive Premier League games, after Danny Cadamarteri, Michael Owen and Francis Jeffers.
Solskjaer said, “I’m doing my part to help him, but he has to do it – give performance in training, in games, live his life properly. It is up to him to see how far he wants to go.
“He is 18 and of course he will get better. He is a natural footballer and has been part of the academy since he was a child. His father showed me a photo of us together when he was seven. He knows that we believe in him. You can’t leave players out when they score goals. ”
Unified goalkeeper David de Gea told BBC Radio 5 Live that Greenwood had “everything in his hands,” adding, “He is a great player, a top finisher. You don’t know if he’s left or right handed and it’s great to see the kid scoring goals like today. You have to be patient with him because he is young. ”
The former United striker and Villa Dion Dublin said in today’s match: “Mason Greenwood is getting better, faster.
“When you have three or four rockets fleeing from you, [Villa defender] Tyrone Mings goes too far. The strike… I thought he was left-handed – what a future he has. ”
We produce performances worthy of Man Utd – Pogba
Another United player who has impressed since the start of the season is midfielder Paul Pogba, who seems to be back at his best after an injury campaign.
The future of the winner of the World Cup in France – who has one year to execute his contract – has been the subject of constant speculation, as it has been linked to moves to Real Madrid and Juventus.
But there may be signs that he is ready to stay at Old Trafford after saying that “Manchester United is a big club”.
Pogba scored their first goal of the season – and the 3-0 victory means that United became the first team in Premier League history to win four straight games with a margin of three or more.
The last team to achieve the feat in the English elite was Liverpool in October 1987.
Pogba said, “We are really happy with ourselves because we know we have to keep going. We talk before the match, in training, Manchester is a big club and we always want to keep the level. ”
“The performances for the past few weeks have been at Manchester United. We have to keep working, there is a lot to do. ”
Solskjaer added: “We still have a contract with Paul. He’s a fantastic person, a fantastic player – one of the best midfielders in the world.
“It’s a different team than the one he left when he was injured. Everything is much better in this locker room. ”
De Gea added: “We are on a very good track. Now I feel like we are a team. Everyone is on the same path, everyone wants to win, to help and I am really happy.
“It’s great to see my teammates playing like today. “
