Mary Kay Letourneau dies of cancer at 58

Mary Kay Letourneau – the former Washington state teacher who became infamous for having sex with a sixth-grade student she later married – died of cancer. She was 58 years old.Lawyer David Gerke, who represented her in the shocking America case, told local media KING-TV that Letourneau was fighting stage 4 cancer.

“It was expected but sad anyway,” he added to KOMO-TV. “He was a good person. ”

In the summer of 1996, Letourneau was a 34-year-old married woman, mother of four, when her relationship with her 12-year-old pupil, Vili Fualaau, became sexual.

She made international headlines when she pleaded guilty in 1997 to raping the student.

Her first child with Fualaau, a girl named Audrey, was born in May 1997 while awaiting conviction.

Thanks to a plea agreement, Letourneau’s sentence was reduced to six months – but two weeks after her release, she was caught having sex with the teenager in a car and returned to the slapper.

At that time, she was pregnant with the couple’s second child, another girl named Georgia, born behind bars.

The children were raised by Fualaau’s mother until Letourneau’s release about seven years later.

The teacher-student couple got married in 2005. But the union did not last, they divorced last year, according to PEOPLE.

Letourneau worked as a paralegal some time before his death and said in 2018 that she wanted to use her new skills to delete her name from the sex offender registry.

At the time of their marriage, Fualaau argued that he did not consider himself the victim of a sexual predator.

“I am not a victim. I am not ashamed to be a father. I’m not ashamed to be in love with Mary Kay, “he said in 2013.
