Manchester United have director of football on the agenda

The challenge for United will be to name the right kind of person. The role in other clubs is to find players for the coach, which can mean having a huge influence on the style of football.United will be looking for a candidate to be part of their current system rather than tearing up the plan that has served them well for the past 18 months.

Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Dan James were seen as successes, while the arrival of Fernandes helped Solskjaer’s side embark on a race that gives them a chance to reach the Champions League with a top four this weekend.

They are eyeing another young England international in Jadon Sancho, with Borussia Dortmund bracing for his departure if a deal is struck with United. There are expected to be more changes in the squad, with a center-back another area that could be strengthened.

Jesse Lingard is one of the players one year away from his United contract and has spoken of “off-court issues” that affected him early in the season. His future has appeared uncertain after failing to start a Premier League game since January 1.

“At the start of the season I had quite a few issues off the pitch that I had to sort out privately,” said Lingard. “Obviously, I told the manager about it and he understood.

“When I was playing, I wasn’t really completely focused. I was thinking about different things behind my head from what was going on off the pitch. I wasn’t really mentally fair, really, to even play to a certain extent.

“Lockdown kind of came at a good time for me, where I could really reassess things that were going on. It’s just about bringing me back to myself, like me to old Jesse.

“I have good people around me who take care of me. The coaching staff are happy so I have to wait for the opportunity now. “
