Leeds was promoted to the Premier League

Leeds United ended their 16-year wait for Premier League football after West Brom was beaten by Huddersfield on Friday night.

Team Marcelo Bielsa, who beat Barnsley 1-0 on Thursday, sealed the promotion with two games to go after the Baggies failed to keep the pressure on at John Smith Stadium.

Leeds had an impressive campaign after bouncing back from the heartache of last season’s playoffs to win the promotion, returning to senior management for the first time since 2004. During this period, there have been several near -accidents, while they also spent three years in Ligue One between 2007 and 2010.

Leeds has yet to clinch the championship title, although Brentford fails to win Stoke on Saturday. If the bees are victorious, then a point at Derby in the Leeds match on Sunday – live on Sky Sports Football – will be enough.

“It means absolutely everything”

Former Leeds defender Dominic Matteo…

“It means absolutely everything. It’s incredible. One of the best feelings I’ve ever had, even if I don’t play or get involved with the club, but it’s absolutely fantastic.

” It is so good. Bielsa and the team have done an incredible job. Everything they did from start to finish was done the right way. They play, they approach and attack people. They did everything so well and I am absolutely delighted for everyone associated with Leeds United.

“For all of these great people around Leeds, it’s for them. It’s absolutely great. “

Former Leeds defender Tony Dorigo…

“When Marcelo Bielsa entered, suddenly, we found our identity. The fans took it, he believed in the project and he certainly loves the city. The fans are with him. He turned very good players into very good players and now they have a chance to play in the Premier League.

“We know it’s difficult. There are levels in the Premier League. Obviously, survival is the first thing and then you are looking to build from there, but there is no doubt that the brand of Leeds United can be reinvigorated worldwide. But let’s take advantage of it first! ”

Former Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson on Sky Sports…

“It has been long overdue and long overdue. When I played this last game in 2004 – almost 16 years ago today – you never imagined that Leeds United would be out of the top for so long and even fall into the third level of English football.

“It is a fantastic achievement of what Marcelo Bielsa inherited two and a half years ago. A team that [then] finished 13th in the Championship for a now automatic promotion to the Premier League. A city with a unique club. ”

A nervous wait finally over

Leeds looked nailed for a promotion in early March. A fifth straight win over Huddersfield brought them seven points ahead of Fulham in the third with only nine games left.

But then the coronavirus crisis put football on hold indefinitely, and the club had to wonder whether or not there would be a restart.

Ultimately, more than three months later, football returned – but Leeds fell to Cardiff in their first return match. Five out of six wins since, however, have got the job done. Leeds have not been in the top five this season, they have completed only seven weeks of play outside of the top two and have occupied an automatic promotion spot since mid-November.

The return flight from Leeds in figures

  • If Leeds win one more game this season, it will be their largest number of joint league victories in club history (27 – also achieved in 1968-69, 1970-71 and 2007-08). If they win their last two games, it will be their highest number of wins in a single league season.
  • Leeds are looking to become the league champion for the seventh time in club history, when it would be the fourth time they have finished 1st in second level in English football.
  • Leeds have won 12 away games in the league this season – if they win at Derby on Sunday it will be their highest total away wins in a single league campaign (13).
  • Leeds has kept 21 clean sheets in the league this season; their most in a single league campaign since 1973/74 under Don Revie (23).
  • Leeds have used only 17 different players from the field as newbies in the league this season; the least on any side.

Recovery from a heartache

For the majority of last season, it looked like Bielsa had organized a return to the Premier League at the first attempt. Sometimes they seemed unstoppable, with seven straight wins from November to December, which kept them on top of the pile all through Christmas.

But, to use the old cliché, their campaign was really a game of two halves. The cracks started to appear with a 2-0 defeat to Hull on December 29, after which they started 2019 with three losses in five games. Shortly after, they were knocked down from the top and although the top two hopefuls have remained intact for the past few weeks, defeats against Wigan and Brentford throughout the Easter weekend sent them back to the playoffs.

A sort of rivalry with Derby arose in January 2019 when Leeds was accused of spying on the Rams’ training sessions before a meeting between the two. Leeds then defeated Frank Lampard’s team 2-0 at Elland Road, but while it was written in the stars that they would be paired in the play-offs, Derby made a superb comeback to win 4 -3 on aggregate.

They learned from last year’s mistakes and certainly learned the hard way, but for Leeds fans it will be even sweeter.

How Leeds won promotion in the Premier League

Last season ended with grief for Leeds United. Despite spending most of the season in the top two, they failed to auto-promote and then left the play-offs for Derby County despite being favored to progress.

But Marcelo Bielsa signed for another year, and they bounced back to get better in 2019/20. Now, after 16 years of waiting, Leeds is back in the Premier League.

Avoiding a hangover, key recruiting and more … that’s how they did it.

What does promotion mean for a Leeds fan

Par Billy Lumsden, fan de Leeds United …

Leeds United Football Club. Back to the promised land. It is a Premier League team for the first time in 16 years.

From a personal point of view, it was a journey, pardon the pun, following Leeds across the country. From the depths of Yeovil to many trips to the Amex ending in disappointment, grief at Wembley to decimation at the hands of Frank Lampard’s County Derby.

You can rarely say you’ve seen it all, but most Leeds United fans will tell you it’s the truth. It’s impossible to sum up the past 16 years in one piece, so here are some highlights.
