In an Instagram Stories post on Wednesday, Kardashian West admitted West had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and said it was “incredibly complicated and painful” for many to understand.
“As many of you know, Kanye suffers from bipolar disorder. Anyone who suffers from this disorder or has a loved one in their life knows how incredibly complicated and painful it is to understand, ”she wrote. “I never spoke. publicly about how it affected us at home because I’m so protective of our children and Kanye’s right to privacy in his health. But today I think I should comment on this because I’m away from the stigma and misconceptions about mental health. ”
She continued to call her husband a “bright but complicated” person and highlighted the hardships he faced, including the loss of his mother, Donda West, in 2007.
“I understand that Kanye comes under criticism for being a public figure and his actions can sometimes provoke strong opinions and emotions,” she continued. “She is a brilliant but complicated person who, in addition to the pressure of being an artist and a black man, who has lived through the painful loss of his mother, and has to deal with the pressure and isolation exacerbated by his bipolar disorder. Those close to Kanye know his heart and sometimes understand his words do not match his intentions. ”
West has already been open about his mental health. He spoke to David Letterman last year and said he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and discussed an involuntary psychiatric seizure he suffered in 2016.
“They have this moment where they put you in, they handcuff you, they drug you, they put you on the bed, and they separate you from everyone you know,” he says. “This is something that I’m so happy to have experienced on my own so that I can change this moment first. ”
“When you’re in this state, you’re hyper-paranoid about everything, everyone,” West explained at the time. “It’s my experience, other people have different experiences. Everyone is now an actor. Everything is a conspiracy. You feel that the government is putting bullets in your head. You feel that you are registered. You feel all of these things. ”
West has previously said he does not take regular medication for his condition. His wife appeared to say that she was somewhat helpless in helping her husband seek help without him agreeing to seek it himself.
“Those who understand mental illness or even compulsive behavior know that the family is powerless unless the member is a minor,” she writes. “People who are not aware or who are far removed from this experience may be judgmental and not understand that the individual himself or herself has to go through the process to get help no matter how hard it is. family and friends.
Her husband posted a series of deleted tweets since Tuesday on social media, suggesting he had considered divorce from Kardashian West.
She did not address any specific statement from her husband in her post.
“As a society, we talk about giving thanks to the whole issue of mental health, but we should also give it to people who are living with this disease when they need it most,” he said. she concludes. “I kindly ask that the media and the public give us the compassion and empathy necessary for us to overcome this. “
