Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge has become one of the biggest fashion icons in the world since her marriage to Prince William in 2011. The queen’s future outfits sell almost immediately, and she is known to buy affordable looks too . But one of the main fashion tricks of the duchess came directly from William’s late mother, Princess Diana.

Kate Middleton unleashed the “Kate effect”

When Kate married William, she instantly became one of the most famous women in the world. And for that reason, everything she wore was suddenly a story. People started paying close attention to the Duchess’ outfits and buying her exact clothes – and that’s how the “Kate effect” started.

If an outfit was extremely expensive, similar and more affordable looks would also be sold in a few days. Kate has a few affordable brands she likes, like Zara, and every time she goes out in a Zara garment, the public buys every last size.

Princess Diana was also a fashion icon in her day

While Princess Diana was married to Prince Charles, and even long after the separation of the two, she still wore outfits that had the press obsessed with her style. Although some outfits stand out more than others, like her famous little black “revenge” dress she wore after her separation from Charles, it seemed that people loved the outfit she chose.

Diana’s casual outfits have turned so many heads. She has often paired baggy sweatshirts with tight-fitting workout pants to and fro from the gym, and the look has become one of her most iconic trends.

Kate repeats outfits like Princess Diana

Kate seems to have ripped a page from her mother-in-law’s book. Although Kate never met the late princess, she learned one major thing from William’s mother: rehearsing outfits is never a bad thing. Kate is known for wearing styles, even wearing a dress in 2018 in which she had not been seen for six years.

Diana often did the same. She tended to reshape her outfits, sometimes even cutting the sleeves of dresses and transforming two-piece sets into different outfits using only one of the pieces. Although Kate doesn’t often change her outfits, it is possible that she saw Diana’s interest in fashion rehearsal and felt that she should too.

Princess Charlotte and Meghan Markle are also influential

Kate is not the only royal to have had a major impact on the fashion industry. Even Princess Charlotte, Kate’s five-year-old daughter, stole the outfits of toddlers and children. It has been nicknamed “the Charlotte effect”.

When Meghan Markle got married in the family, she quickly became another icon of royal fashion. Meghan’s style is a little more laid back than Kate’s; she even wore jeans for a royal engagement in southern Africa. But his style was applicable to many people; it better reflected everyday fashion than Kate’s more glamorous style. Meghan has also had a huge impact on the industry, and despite having left the royal family in March, she will likely continue to influence trends.
