She told Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid: “For Darcey and Billy, they did lose their father.

“He is not there but he is present in their lives. ”

When he first fell ill, Derek tried to reassure Kate and their children Darcey, 14, and Billy, 10, that he was going to recover and overcome the disease.

“I have text messages on my phone saying” I’m not going to die “. I’m better, show my photos to the kids, ”said Kate.

She said, “A doctor who treated him at two hospitals said he was as sick as anyone I have ever seen in 35 years of medicine.”

“Six times, they said he wouldn’t do it. He was very, very sick. ”

Kate remembered the feeling of terror she felt when Derek’s condition suddenly worsened.

She said, “The kidneys fail, the liver fails, the heart … Each step was a new terror. Just when I thought we were moving on, we now know that it can affect your body everywhere. ”

Despite the severity of her condition, Kate said there were signs of hope.

She said, “The problem is that this is a new disease that no one knows about.

“It’s great that there is a ray of hope. His lungs are starting to recover a bit… they don’t know how much better he can get. ”

Doctors learned about Derek’s disease and changed the way they treat patients because of him.

Kate said, “They’ve already changed lanes because of Derek. They check things out earlier in other patients.

“I keep telling him on FaceTime that he will be delighted.

“But it’s exasperating because it was the wife that he should be the only one to do. ”

Earlier this week, Kate said her husband lost “a huge amount of weight” during his battle with the coronavirus.

The 53-year-old said he looked “so different” when she saw him on an iPad video call after nurses were forced to shave their faces because his beard was become too big.

Referring to their children Darcey, 14, and Billy, 10, FaceTiming their father, she said, “They had never seen him without thatch or beard before.”

“During their conversations, they tell him what they have done and their sense of humor often shows through. ”

Kate revealed in an interview last night that Derek was out of his coma after 98 days in the hospital and even opened his eyes.

She said, “When the medical staff says, ‘Hello, Derek,’ he sometimes opens his eyes. We and the doctors are doing everything we can so that he can start to recover. ”

However, in a rare article published on social media today, she also issued a cautionary note, saying that the day he returned home after recovering still seemed “very uncertain” in these “appalling times” ”

She wrote: “The future we really hope for, Derek recovering and going home is not nearly in sight and very uncertain.

“But it is positive to share the way we try to keep ourselves going, because I know many are facing terrible challenges in all kinds of ways as we all try to get out of these horrible times, just as we continue to hope Derek can emerge. of his minimum state of consciousness.
