But Dolce, a reputed strength and conditioning trainer who has worked with many top athletes, thinks the Masvidal cut will come down to a lot of hydration and the elimination of carbohydrates.
“Jorge is not a big welterweight guy,” Dolce told MMA Junkie Radio. “He was a big light weight. He’s not a big welterweight. Jorge doesn’t go down from 210 like some of these other welterweight weights, as we could say, Usman just went down. But with Jorge, we’re increasing water consumption, which is probably what he’s going to do. He will start to rinse his body, flood some of this water, and he will drop the bread, drop the heavy carbohydrates.
“I hope he won’t drop all the carbs and stop his body, but he will drop a lot of these heavy and complex carbs, and his body will continue to purge the water. I’m sure they will throw salads in him two, three, four days. They’ll probably make it work, put it in a hotbox and sweat the rest. ”
Dolce remembers helping Chael Sonnen cut 20 pounds in just 24 hours, probably referring to when Sonnen had to reach the middleweight limit for his rematch against Anderson Silva in UFC 148.
So if Sonnen could do it in one day, Dolce says Masvidal (35-13 MMA, 12-6 CFU) should have no problem doing it in six.
“I don’t see a problem with Masvidal losing 20 pounds in a week. I mean, it’s easy, “said Dolce. “Remember, once upon a time, Chael Sonnen lost 20 pounds in one day when he and I were working together. ”
Dolce actually thinks Usman (16-1 MMA, 11-0 UFC) will find it harder to gain weight because he’s the tallest, but he has no doubt that the champion will reach the limit.
“Usman, on the other hand, Usman is great,” said Dolce. “Usman has the same body weight as Masvidal. The story should be how Kamaru Usman will gain weight when Usman goes down from 190 and up in about a week. It will be interesting. But we know Usman. He’s going to gain weight, he’ll look like a million dollars when he steps on the scales, and he’ll be a much taller man when he enters the octagon than Masvidal. “
