Jordan Henderson was crowned Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year for the 2019/20 season.

The Liverpool captain saw fierce competition from Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne and Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford, as well as team-mates Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane, to claim the honor.

Liverpool’s dominance in the league was reflected in the vote as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alisson Becker also received votes, but it was Henderson – with more than a quarter of the vote – who was clearly the winner .

Reflecting on his victory, Henderson said: “I would like to say how grateful I am for the support of those who voted for me and for the Football Writers’ Association in general.

“You just have to look at the former winners, who I had the chance to play with here in Liverpool, like Stevie (Gerrard), Luis (Suarez) and Mo (Salah) to know how prestigious he is. .

“But as grateful as I am, I don’t feel like I can accept this on my own.

“I don’t feel like everything I’ve accomplished this season or in fact my entire career has been done by myself.

“I owe a lot to so many different people – but no more than my current teammates – who have been amazing and deserve it as much as I do.

“We only achieved what we did because every member of our team was brilliant. And not just in matches. Not just by producing the moments that make the headlines and the last pages, but every day in training. “

Henderson became the first Liverpool captain to lift the Premier League trophy, as the Reds ended a 30-year wait for a top-flight title.

It has been an exceptional year for club and country for the 30-year-old, as Henderson captained Liverpool in the Champions League title in 2019, while the club also won the Club World Cup in December.

Henderson has scored four goals and five assists in a league campaign in which Liverpool have tasted defeat on only three occasions and his instrumental contribution has now been recognized by football writers across the country.

Henderson joins Arsenal’s Vivianne Miedema, who was named FWA Footballer of the Year earlier this month.

A year ago it was a brace for Manchester City as Sterling won the FWA Men’s Award and Nikita Parris was named FWA Footballer of the Year.

The Footballer of the Year trophy has been awarded since 1948, when Sir Stanley Matthews was its first recipient.

Analysis: how Henderson became the leader of Liverpool

Nick Wright de Sky Sports …

At 30, after adding a Premier League title to the Champions League trophy he won in June, he is on his way to becoming one of the most decorated captains in recent Liverpool history. Jordan Henderson, more than any other player, has been the engine of their success.

Henderson is now the FWA Footballer of the Year and his importance to Liverpool is universally recognized. But before all that, he had to withstand years of almost relentless criticism.

Henderson has been questioned and maligned like few others. His move to Liverpool in 2011 was met with mockery. He was not up to the task, they said. Too expensive and not good enough for England either. In his 2013 autobiography, Sir Alex Ferguson even questioned his racing style.

Many people doubted that he would ever achieve this status. Lots of people who would have laughed at the mere thought. But Jordan Henderson was not one of them.
