Jordan Henderson said he was “devastated” to miss the Premier League title in 2014 as he dedicated 2020 success to Steven Gerrard.Henderson took over the captain’s armband of the legendary Gerrard in the summer of 2015, a year after the Reds failed Manchester City in a thrilling title race under Brendan Rodgers.

It’s Gerrard’s fateful slide into a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea that many see as the defining moment of the race as City grabbed the leaders in the last three games to win it two points.

Six years later, Henderson’s perseverance was rewarded as Liverpool was confirmed champion for the 19th time on Thursday evening.

Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over City at Stamford Bridge means that Liverpool, with their 23-point advantage, cannot be made up for, as a 30-year wait for a league crown is finally over.

Henderson said he had the chance to speak to his predecessor by dedicating the triumph to Gerrard and the manager who brought him to Anfield in 2011, Sir Kenny Dalglish.

“Yes, I spoke briefly to Stevie,” said Henderson. “I think I will speak to him properly in the next few days. But of course, everything he did for me and this football club.

“I think the manager mentioned it last night, it’s not only for us as players and the fans, but it’s also for players like Stevie, Kenny who matter so much to this football club and I know how much it would mean for Stevie to win the Premier League title.

“He is so happy for us to be able to do this. I was devastated in 2014 that we couldn’t cross the finish line for him, but I know he will be so happy and proud of this team to be able to bring the Premier League trophy to Liverpool and, yes, the one – this is personal enough for me and certainly doing it for him is quite large.

“I said this when I first took over as captain when people may have doubted me and criticized me as a person, but I will always say that no one will replace Steven Gerrard in this club of football, regardless of the captains or teams winning.

Liverpool is Premier League champion

“No one will ever replace him. It was not even in my mind when I took the helm of the harbor office to replace it, it was just to do my best for this football club and this team and that’s all I have never actually try to do. For Steven Gerrard, no one will ever replace him. ”

After getting the Champions League trophy tattoo after winning the sixth Reds European Cup in Madrid last year, Henderson was asked to follow suit after winning the Premier League.

And the British international has hinted that new ink may be on the cards after a long-awaited success at Anfield.

” Perhaps! ” he said. “Some of the guys mentioned this to be fair. So I don’t think I can drop them but we will have to wait and see. “
