British socialist Ghislaine Maxwell, a close friend of pedophile billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, was arrested on Thursday in New Hampshire. She is charged with sex crimes involving the disgraced financier who committed suicide in his New York prison cell last year. GUY ADAMS explores how Maxwell went from a wealthy elite to a shady “pimp” …
Jeffrey Epstein, in one of the few interviews he gave to someone who was neither a lawyer nor a police officer, was asked to explain his close but somewhat mysterious relationship with Ghislaine Maxwell.
He simply replied, “She is my best friend. It was 2003 and the colorful financier was talking to Vanity Fair.
Ghislaine Maxwell, in a photo shoot in the early 1990s. She appeared in a spread of art books wearing a tiny bikini with the theme of the American flag published in a publication intended to promote Sotheby’s vintage fashion collection.
The magazine journalist was intrigued by the exact role played by the then 41-year-old British socialite, whose tasks seemed to range from organizing Epstein’s diary to managing various households and appearing on his arm at glamorous social functions.
Although the sordid chain of events that would end in Epstein’s death in prison had not yet started, magazine editor Vicky Ward realized that something was wrong.
“A young woman remembers being summoned by Ghislaine Maxwell to a concert at the town house in Epstein where women seemed far outnumbered by men,” she writes. “They weren’t women you would see at dinners on the Upper East Side … Many looked foreign and dressed a bit oddly. “
A source told Ward that at another cocktail party, also hosted by Maxwell and attended by Prince Andrew, the room was “filled with young Russian models,” adding: “Some of the guests were horrified!
Compared to the revelations of the following years, in which Maxwell was directly involved in a worldwide pedophile scandal involving dozens of victims, some as young as 12, this may seem relatively insignificant.
Yet this points to a simple truth: the trip that culminated yesterday with Maxwell, 58, who speaks well, was arrested by the FBI and placed in detention reflects his decision to accept the role of official “best friend” of Epstein.

Prosecutors say Maxwell treated three girls between 1994 and 1997 for Epstein.
They are not named in the indictment, but allegedly targeted them in London, Florida, New York and New Mexico.
Maxwell is said to have made friends with the girls by asking them about their lives and their education. She would put them at ease by taking them to the movies and taking them shopping, gaining their confidence to deliver them to Epstein later, it is said.
To “normalize” the abuse that would come later, prosecutors say she undressed in front of the girls herself and asked them about sex.
She then not only facilitated Epstein’s abuse, say prosecutors, but participated in it herself.
The alleged sexual abuse includes “sexualized group massages”.
The indictment also indicates that Maxwell made the girl feel “indebted” to Epstein by encouraging them to take money from him and let him pay for their education and travel.
The indictment alleges:
- Maxwell cared for three anonymous girls, all under the age of 18, in London, New York and Florida, and in New Mexico between 1994 and 1997
- She befriended them by taking them to the movies or shopping and by engaging in “normalized” abusive behavior by undressing herself in front of them
- She encouraged them to travel to meet Epstein and to have sex with him and him as “group sex massages” in Epstein’s homes.
- His presentation earned him to mistreat them when she was not present
- She lied in the 2016 depositions while being chased by Virginia Giuffre Roberts that she had never cared for or had sex with underage girls herself
Whether she will spend the rest of her life behind bars depends on a simple question.
Was she really, as several accusers have already sworn, a shady lady who not only recruited vulnerable teenage girls to provide sexual services to her ex-boyfriend but illegally trafficked them and participated in appalling episodes of abuse?
Or was she just a naive party girl with a knack for networking, which helped the wealthy but somewhat clumsy Epstein climb the social ladder, but had no idea of the sordid sex crimes he was committing?
One thing that cannot be denied is that no one has a better knowledge of the billionaire pedophile and his relationships with the great and the good than Maxwell.
She beams like a proud mother in the notorious 2001 photo of the Duke of York with Victoria Roberts, then 17, who now claims that Epstein paid her to sleep with the prince after a nighttime visit to the nightclub. Tramp night.
Epstein himself took the photo at Maxwell’s mews house in Belgravia. Maxwell watches as the prince wraps an arm around his painful young acquaintance.
Maxwell also appears in photographs of Epstein and Donald Trump taken in the seaside resort of Mar-aLago in Florida, and in photos that show her socializing with teenage girls (plus a middle-aged French model called Jean Luc Brunel, also involved in Epstein (crimes) on the private island of the deceased financier in the Caribbean.
And Maxwell’s name passes, like letters in a stick of rock, through the numerous trials and legal depositions filed by the alleged victims of Epstein, many of whom accuse him of recruiting them, of having them stolen around the world and, in several cases, presiding over disgusting abuses.
The flight records show that Victoria Roberts made at least 23 trips with Maxwell on the Epstein private jet, dubbed the “Lolita Express”.
Maxwell was picked up by FBI and NYPD detectives at 8:30 a.m. on the property in Bradford, New Hampshire, which she purchased in December 2019 using a limited company called Granite LLC to protect his name.
Maxwell was arrested in the luxurious mountain-top house – nicknamed Tuckedaway – outside the small town of Bradford, New Hampshire
She says she was 15 when Maxwell first persuaded her to visit the Epstein mansion in Florida, where the walls were covered with pictures of naked girls and the bathrooms contained soap in the form of parts male and female genitals.
She claims that Ghislaine undressed and told her to do the same, before showing her how to wash the middle-aged financier with soap and then perform a series of sexual acts.
In court documents, she said, “Ghislaine took several nude photos of me for Jeffrey” and used to buy erotic outfits so that the teens in her house could wear them. “Jeffrey loved the latex outfits that Ghislaine had for us girls,” reads a 2011 file. “He had bondage outfits, he had all kinds of outfits, but his favorite was the schoolgirl.
A second woman, Johanna Sjoberg, said she was a cash-strapped student when Maxwell approached her on the campus of a small university in Palm Beach. She says that she was offered $ 100 to do foot massages in nearby Epstein’s house, but was finally told to strip and that M a x w e l had sex with her.
In 2001, Sjoberg and Roberts say they had tea with Maxwell and Prince Andrew at Epstein’s New York home. At one point, they allege, the Duke groped his chest with a Spitting Image puppet.
A third woman, known as “BB”, said in a 2010 lawsuit that Maxwell “had a wardrobe at Epstein Estate in which she kept sex toys and outfits” and “voluntarily , had actively and passively participated in sexual acts with underage girls whom she recruited ”. Etc.
Maxwell has an amazing network of friends and high-level acquaintances. She is presented at the wedding of Chelsea Clinton in 2010

These and others are said to have assisted the FBI in their investigations. But whatever the legal cause, Maxwell has had a lot of practice in dealing with public shame.
Favorite child of twisted newspaper magnate Robert Maxwell, she had a golden education, attending Marlborough College and then Oxford University before moving to London in the 1980s to found the Kit Kat Club, which claimed to be an alternative to the old school. network for women of great power.
Trump described Epstein in 2002 as “a great guy.” The two fell in 2004, and Trump now says they weren’t close.
She then worked for her father’s newspaper The European and was appointed director of the Oxford United football club, which he owned.
This happy existence imploded in November 1991 when his father drowned after falling from a yacht named Lady Ghislaine, named after his daughter.
It soon became clear that his newspaper empire was built on epic financial crime, which had seen him defraud his nearly half a billion pound pension fund.
Vilified in the United Kingdom, where the victims of Robert Maxwell were irritated by the luxurious lifestyle which his family had enjoyed at their expense, Ghislaine moved to New York, where she took up residence in a small apartment and began to reinvent as a socialite.
It was an inspired decision. “Ghislaine has always been a wonderful networker,” an acquaintance once told me. “New Yorkers were laughing at the retirement scandal.
And, of course, these are all suction cups for an English accent.
Maxwell, then 30, quickly met Epstein, who was almost a decade older.
Apparently attracted by her resemblance to her father, she was soon photographed as her guest at social receptions. “He saved her,” said a friend. “When her father died, she was a wreck; inconsolable.
And then Jeffrey welcomed her. She never forgot it and never will. The initial romance soon softened, however, amid rumors that Epstein wanted to see other women.

Ghislaine Maxwell, presented last August – the last time she was seen publicly – was arrested on Thursday morning
The charges against her yesterday alleged that she was involved in the trafficking of young girls for sexual purposes with him in 1994.
To outsiders, Ghislaine was a sort of fixer-confidant, helping to manage Epstein’s households, travel, and social calendar – a role in which she would continue for more than a decade, leading him into circles where the Clintons , Kennedys and other world leaders moved.
Her relationship with Prince Andrew, to whom she was allegedly introduced by old girlfriend Sarah Ferguson, gave Epstein an entry into royal circles. In the early 2000s, he was invited to Balmoral, as well as to the Queen’s birthday party.
In return, Epstein gave Maxwell a jet-set lifestyle far beyond anything she could afford thanks to the £ 80,000 a year trust fund created for her by her twisted father, traveling in private jets sharing his time between his mansion in Florida, Ranch in New Mexico, private Caribbean island and house in New York, the largest private residence in the city.
Yet there was a dark side to life in these glamorous residences. Juan Alessi, a former butler, said he would clean Epstein’s room (which adjoins Maxwell’s) after enjoying erotic massages and sometimes finding vibrators and sex toys in Maxwell’s sink.
Alfredo Rodriguez, another former butler, testified that Maxwell kept an office under the stairs in the Palm Beach house, where his computer contained a list of girls who came there for massages, with their phone numbers and nude photos of some of them . “I don’t think they knew they were being photographed,” he said.
Tony Figueroa, a former bodyguard, said in legal documents that Maxwell asked him to recruit school-aged girls to visit Epstein. He also said that Maxwell and Epstein had participated in several triplets with some of them.
When the whole building collapsed in 2005, Florida police identified between 36 and 60 victims.
As the “favorite” daughter of the disgraced newspaper baron, Ghislaine had an impeccable network of contacts. The father and the daughter are represented in 1984
Born in Paris on Christmas Day in 1961 from her French mother Elisabeth and her father, Robert Ghislaine was the youngest of nine years old. She is pictured on the left with her sisters and on the right in 1984
A “little black book” containing Maxwell’s contacts contained details of dozens of young girls. A newspaper left by the phone showed that she made several of the girls visit Epstein regularly.
Epstein was eventually arrested, but after three years of legal wrangling, he negotiated an extraordinary plea agreement in which he pleaded guilty to two minor charges of prostitution and had to spend 13 months in open jail.
Despite the public setback, Maxwell remained a loyal friend, continuing to organize his social calendar and at Christmas 2010 – when he was a child sex offender – persuading Prince Andrew to join Woody Allen and a host of celebrities during a dinner at La maison d’Epstein in New York.
In 2013, Prince Andrew attended his birthday party at the Dorchester in London. However, at that time, more problems were brewing.
In 2014, I revealed that court documents had been filed in Florida that, for the first time, accused Maxwell of orchestrating the Epstein abuses.
She responded by engaging the London law firm Devonshires, which claimed that Epstein’s crimes “had been committed long after Ghislaine Maxwell had stopped dealing with him” – an allegation which was manifestly false.

In return, she used the financier’s millions to support a lavish lifestyle that included a home on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, a designer wardrobe and helicopter lessons. Maxwell is represented with the Naomi Cambell model in 2002
At this point, she remained in close contact with Prince Andrew. A leaked email sent at 5:50 a.m. on January 3, 2015 revealed that Andrew wrote to Maxwell, “I have specific questions for you about Virginia Roberts.
She replied, “Have some information – call me when you have a moment. And in June of last year, she visited the prince in his private quarters at Buckingham Palace. Two months later, Epstein was arrested for the second and last time.
At the time, Maxwell was supposed to be quietly locked up in Manchester-by-the-Sea, north of Boston in the United States, with a boss of a tech company called Scott Borgerson.
She is said to have moved to a 3 million pound seaside mansion with several acres of private woodland in 2016 after allegedly persuading Borgerson, then 43, to abandon his wife and young children for her.
By the time the media descended on the property, it had disappeared and there followed a surreal period in which it appeared to have completely disappeared, offering no explanation or apology to the many victims of Epstein.
There was one apparent sighting in a Los Angeles hamburger bar, another in a Brazilian resort. At one point, her own lawyers were forced to tell a New York court that they did not know where she lived and could not contact her.
In one last act of shamelessness, she filed a lawsuit against the estate of the late Jeffrey Epstein (then), claiming that she was entitled to her money to pay for her legal and personal security costs.
This claim has yet to be resolved. But, given the gravity of yesterday’s events, Ghislaine Maxwell may soon be spending a long time in the same place where money cannot buy you a better life.
“Maxwell indescribable, child groomer”: Ghislaine Maxwell is accused of being “baffled”, says Prince Andrew: It’s time to go
by Sam Greenhill, Daniel Bates and Rebecca English
Prosecutors last night urged Prince Andrew to “talk to us” after the FBI arrested Ghislaine Maxwell on charges of child sex.
They jumped on the British socialite yesterday in a dawn raid on her refuge in New Hampshire.
Several hours later, she appeared in court on charges of sordid violence inflicted on girls as young as 14, including one in London.
Prosecutors at an explosive press conference called Andrew’s former friend “an indescribable villain” who treated girls for the abuse of financier Jeffrey Epstein and, at times, herself.
But investigators have suggested that the alleged madam may now become a “co-operator” in their investigation of Epstein’s accomplices.
And they renewed their calls for Andrew to tell them about Epstein because they promised that Maxwell’s surprise arrest wouldn’t be the end of their investigations.

A source close to Andrew told the Mail: “We remain puzzled that despite our difficulties with the Department of Justice earlier this year, we have had contact with them twice in the past month to resume the process Duke assisting the investigation – and received no response. We remain willing to commit. “
Maxwell firmly denied any knowledge or involvement in the Epstein crimes and in 2011 released a statement that said, “The allegations made against me are heinous and entirely false. “
Amid speculation, she could enter into a plea agreement to reduce a potential 35-year sentence:
- Maxwell has been charged with sexual abuse and trafficking of three children;
- The daughter of the late Robert Maxwell has been accused of befriending and “luring” underage girls into her sordid “trap”;
- She has turned a web of lies to cover up her “unspeakable” crimes against children, it has been alleged;
- Maxwell was found hiding in New Hampshire, where the FBI said she “slipped”;
- She had “15 different bank accounts” worth $ 20 million (£ 16 million), according to a memorandum from prosecutors.
Her “substantial resources” – she transferred $ 500,000 between accounts in a single day – put her at high risk of leakage, according to the memo.
Maxwell appeared last night via video link – because of the coronavirus rules – before the US District Court in Concord, New Hampshire.
When asked if she could see the judge and his lawyer, she replied “I can” with a cut glass accent.
Investigating judge Andrea Johnstone read Maxwell’s rights and no pleas have been filed.
When asked if she needed consular assistance from another country – she has British, American and French nationality – Maxwell appeared to say “No”.
At the end of the 20-minute hearing, the judge told Maxwell that she would be sent to New York where the charges were laid.
She added: “You are being held in pre-trial detention with the American marshals. “

Virginia Roberts Giuffre is not one of the three alleged victims. She alleges that she was Epstein’s sex slave and that she was forced to have sex with minors with Prince Andrew, an assertion that he categorically and repeatedly denied.
