Graeme Souness names Jurgen Klopp move as biggest company in Liverpool history

Graeme Souness hailed Liverpool’s decision to sell Philippe Coutinho to allow them to buy Virgil van Dijk and Alisson as their biggest transfer company of all time. The Reds sold the Brazilian to Barcelona for £ 140million in January 2018, 18 months before winning the Champions League.

This allowed Jurgen Klopp to secure a deal for Van Dijk the same month, while Alisson arrived at the club the following summer from AS Roma.

Both additions helped catapult Liverpool into a new era, with the Champions League trophy quickly followed by the Premier League and the Club World Cup, making them champions of England, Europe and of the world in 12 months.

The Reds actually saw a small net profit with both purchases due to the huge fees received for Coutinho.

Considering the impact of those signings, Souness believes this is the big company in the club’s history.

“The secret of consistency is driven by the manager,” he said during the Premier League trophy celebrations in Liverpool.

“I’m never tired of saying this, you can only be successful if you have good senior professionals. I think senior professionals drive this consistency.

“We cannot abandon our standards”, as well as the manager. In terms of recruiting, this is always the most important thing you have to do in a football club.

“If you recruit well, you get leaders, you get talented players, you have the right players in your club.

“It lives on for the wonderful team we have here. I seem to end every sentence with “this team is not going anywhere, this team will not be beaten for a while”.

Liverpool lift Premier League trophy

“When you say which is the most important signing I think you can remember when Liverpool went from a good team to a great team.

“They sold Coutinho and got £ 160million or whatever, they got Alisson and they got Van Dijk and they still had some change left.

“It has to be the best business this club has ever done. ”
