WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Governor Greg Abbott announced Saturday that the Texas Department of Health Services (DSHS) is distributing five cases of antiviral remdesivir to a hospital in Waco, Texas, and another in neighboring Bell County .
McLennan County, which is home to Waco, and Bell County currently have the most confirmed and active COVID-19 cases in central Texas.
The governor’s office said it was the sixth round of federal drug distribution.
With 448 cases, this is the largest and sufficient distribution to treat approximately 1,792 patients, ”said the Abbott office.
State health officials have said that remdesivir “has shown promise in early trials to speed up recovery time in COVID-19 patients.”
Medical staff at each hospital will determine who receives the drug, said the Abbott office.
