Global Coronavirus Cases Surpass 16 Million As Virus ‘Enters’ North Korea

The number of confirmed coronavirus the number of cases worldwide has exceeded 16 million.

According to a count from Johns Hopkins University, the United States leads with 4.1 million, followed by 2.3 million in Brazil and 1.3 million in India.

The United States also has the highest number of deaths with 146,460, followed by 86,449 in Brazil and 45,823 in the United Kingdom.

In the United States, New York State leads with 32,608 deaths.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said he believed “the vicious virus” may have entered the country and placed Kaesong town, near the border with South Korea, under total lockdown after a person was found with suspected symptoms of Covid-19.

The measurement was taken on Friday afternoon after a resident of Kaesong was discovered with suspected symptoms of Covid-19, according to the North Korea Central News Agency (KCNA).

He added that the person was a fugitive who fled to South Korea years ago before illegally crossing the border into the north early last week.

If this person is officially declared sick with the virus, they would be the first confirmed coronavirus case in the North, with the country firmly saying it does not have a single virus case in its territory, a claim questioned by outside experts .

In South Korea, the number of new cases fell below 60, a day after reporting more than 100 for the first time in nearly four months.

Korea’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed 58 more cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 14,150 with 298 deaths.

Twelve of the newly confirmed cases were infected locally while the rest came from abroad.

Health officials said Saturday’s 113 cases were mostly imported infections found among cargo ship crews and hundreds of South Korean construction workers airlifted out of virus-ravaged Iraq.

Vietnam reimposed restrictions on one of its most popular beach destinations after a second person tested positive for the virus, the first locally transmitted case in the country in more than three months.

Da Nang authorities have banned gatherings of more than 30 people in public places as well as all sporting, cultural and religious events in the city of 1.1 million people. Theme parks, beauty salons, bars and clubs have also been ordered to close.

A 61-year-old man was confirmed to be infected on Sunday, a day after a 57-year-old man tested positive for coronavirus. Both are in critical condition and require life-saving assistance.

Health workers, however, were unable to establish a link between the two men, nor to trace the source of the infection. It was reported that they had not left the city, where there had been no cases since April, last month.

Several hundred people who had been in contact with the men initially tested negative for the virus. The city has also started testing on a larger scale.

Vietnam has not allowed the resumption of international trade fights, but has led repatriation fights for Vietnamese experts stranded abroad and internationally. All arrivals must go through quarantine at designated facilities.

The new infections bring the number of cases in Vietnam to 418 without deaths.

China reported 46 new cases of Covid-19 on Sunday, the highest daily tally in more than a month, as it took action to stem recent outbreaks that have infected more than 160 people on opposite ends of the country .

Authorities have confirmed 22 cases in Urumqi, a town in the far western Xinjiang region, the state-run Xinhua news agency said. That brought the local outbreak total to 137 since the first case was detected 10 days ago.

Thirteen more cases were confirmed in northeastern Liaoning Province, bringing the total to 25, almost all in Dalian City.

The National Health Commission also reported 11 imported cases in the last 24-hour period, in people arriving from abroad.

China has recorded 83,830 cases and 4,634 deaths since the start of the pandemic. The Health Commission said 288 patients are still in treatment, including 18 in critical condition.

In Australia, Victoria state recorded 10 deaths overnight – its highest daily toll amid a continuing rise in cases.

State Prime Minister Daniel Andrews said seven men and three women have died. A man in his 40s has become one of the youngest deaths from Covid-19 in Australia.

There were 459 new infections, the 21st consecutive day of a triple-digit increase.

The deaths bring Victoria’s toll to 71 and Australia’s national toll to 155. A total of 228 people are hospitalized in Victoria, 42 of them in intensive care.

Victoria processed 42,973 tests on Saturday, said Andrews, “by far the biggest test result we’ve seen in a single day.”

He said he is not currently planning to extend the lockdown in Melbourne, Australia’s second largest city.
