“But obviously there is so much importance. It attracts fans and it’s a unique tool and I’m sure the team will look into it to see where we are. ”
NTT has been a competitive force in the field of online racing games since the lockdown started in mid-March. On stage 1 of the Virtual Tour, the team was always present and visible at the head of the race. For Gibbons, this comes from a sense of collective motivation and good communication.
“We have a system that keeps us connected and it’s almost like a racing radio,” he said. “We have our coaches and directors chatting with us. So in the last round, Reinardt Janse van Rensburg tried to set things up and attack just to get a chase. ”
“In the end it worked for us, but we knew what we were doing at all times. Like everything, whether it’s a virtual race or a Grand Tour, you have to work on it. We have a great setup here with runners based here in Girona. We come together and it’s a matter of simulating a race, far from a race. ”
With the yellow jersey owned by the team before stage 2 of the Virtual Tour de France, the South African rider is determined to help maintain NTT’s success in the race.
“I can’t say too much, but this victory was a declaration and every race we participate in, whether it’s a punch like today, a sprint or a climber stage, we just go with the best team possible we have and we will try to win as much as possible. ”
The Virtual Tour of France continues on Sunday. Find out how to watch the race here.
