‘Ghost Of Tsushima’ is the 17th best PS4 exclusivity, which speaks volumes

It’s the day of Ghost of Tsushima’s official release of Infamous dev Sucker Punch, and PlayStation fans can’t wait to get their hands on it.

By all accounts, the buzz around Ghost of Tsushima sounds pretty positive, and the worst thing anyone can say about it is that its open world may feel a bit generic for the current gaming landscape, but it is well noted, an 83 on Metacritic.

Although I thought that Ghost of Tsushima was probably the last “big” exclusive version before the arrival of the PS5 this fall, I would try to examine it in a broader context. And that context just shows a phenomenal series of games for PS4 in the last generation.

The respectable 83 from Ghost of Tshusima on Metacritic actually makes it what I believe to be the 17th best reviewed PS4 of this generation. It may sound pretty bad until you look at the main list and see the caliber of games on it.

I cut a few that had less than ten reviews, some of them were finally saved to PC, and I may have missed one or two after browsing around 200 games, but here is the list that I developed, with Tsushima in 17th place.

  • 1. Persona 5 Royal (95)
  • 2. The last of us remastered (95)
  • 3. God of war (94)
  • 4. The last of us, part 2 (94)
  • 5. Person 5 (93)
  • 6. Uncharted 4 (93)
  • 7. Voyage (92)
  • 8. Bloodborne (92)
  • 9. Dreams (89)
  • 10. Horizon Zero Dawn (89)
  • 11. Nioh (88)
  • 12. Spider-Man (87)
  • 13. Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection (86)
  • 14. Nioh 2 (85)
  • 15. Ratchet and rattle (85)
  • 16. Uncharted Lost Legacy (84)
  • 17. Ghost of Tsushima (83)

If there is one reason why fans of Sony and PlayStation are confident about the future of the PS5, even with an exclusive line that is fairly anemic at launch, it’s this list. A generation of monster titles, many of which are likely to see other next-generation quality sequels.

Microsoft also offers many exclusives! But putting the lists side by side (I can do this in a later post), the only two exclusives of this generation who scored 90 or more were two games Forza and Ori. High profile entries in high profile series are at the bottom end of a list like this (Gears 5 and Halo 5 both at 84). But Microsoft is preparing for a whole series of new first-party games for the X series, so we’ll see what’s going on there.

But yes, it’s a whole generation if Ghost of Tsushima is considered an “inferior” exclusivity. Off to play for me now.
