PARIS (Reuters) – France reported 534 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 18 new deaths from the virus Thursday, hours after ministers urged people to start wearing masks in closed public places to avoid a new outbreak of the epidemic.

According to data from the Ministry of Health, the total number of deaths since the start of the epidemic has reached 30,138 and the number of confirmed cases was 173,838.

The number of people hospitalized was 6,796, down 119 from the past 24 hours, and the number of people in intensive care was 481, one less than a day earlier.
