Florida sees new daily record high coronavirus cases

(Reuters) – Confirmed cases of coronavirus in Florida increased 11,458 records on Saturday, the state health department said the second time in three days that its workload has increased by more than 10,000.In the first four days alone in July, 14 states recorded a daily record increase in cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus that killed nearly 130,000 Americans.

The recent surge, most pronounced in southern and western states, alarmed public health officials, who called for caution before the holiday weekend to celebrate the declaration of independence for the United States in 1776.

The record increase in the number of cases in Florida was higher than the daily peak of any European country at the height of the epidemic.

On Friday, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alaska, Missouri, Idaho and Alabama all recorded new highs, while Texas reached a new peak in hospitalizations.

The daily count of cases in the United States was 53,483 on Friday evening, below the record of 55,405 the day before.

Despite the increase in infections, the average number of deaths per day in the United States has gradually declined in recent weeks, reflecting the increasing proportion of positive tests among younger, healthier people who are less prone to serious results.

Proof that the surge is not simply due to the expansion of tests, the percentage of tests returning positive in Florida fell to 14.8% in the last two weeks compared to 8.3% the previous two weeks, according to a Reuters analysis. The World Health Organization says a rate above 5% is cause for concern.

In this context, the mayor of the county of Miami-Dade, Carlos Gimenez, imposed an unlimited night curfew starting from Friday and suspended the reopening of places of entertainment such as the casinos and strip clubs. Earlier this week, Miami-Dade and neighboring Broward County, the two most populous counties in the state, demanded residents wear face coverings in public.

Arkansas joined an effort to impose public face masks on Friday, Governor Asa Hutchinson has authorized cities and state states to issue a “model order” requiring that they wear face covers wish.

The move came a day after Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered face masks to be worn in most public places, reversing his position following an alarming increase in infections in the state, which on Friday marked a new hospital record at 7,652.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly sought to reject the jump in confirmed cases based on more tests and again predicted this week that the virus would “go away”.

“If you test 40,000,000 people, you’re going to have many cases that, without the tests (like in other countries), wouldn’t appear every night on the Fake Evening News,” Trump wrote on Twitter on Saturday. .
