‘Black Widow’ director confirmed Florence Pugh is MCU’s next Black Widow
In a new issue of Empire magazine, Cate Shortland revealed that Pugh will take on the role of Johansson now that his version of Black Widow has died.
« [Kevin Feige] realized that audiences would expect an original story, so, of course, we went in the opposite direction, “said Shortland for the July 9 issue of the magazine. “And we didn’t know how great Florence Pugh would be. We knew it would be great, but we didn’t know how much. Scarlett is so graceful, like, “Oh, I give her the stick. This will therefore propel another female scenario. ”
After a huge 2019 for Pugh, which included Midsommar, Little women, and her first Oscar nomination, she seems to be the perfect actor to play a role as important as Black Widow. This is what many people thought would happen, at first, Black Widow, but now it’s official.
Shortland also shared Johansson’s thoughts on Natasha’s death and the lack of burials in Avengers: Endgame. Black Widow takes place in the two-year interval between Captain America: civil war and Avengers: Infinity War.
” In End of Game, fans were upset that Natasha had no funeral. When Scarlett, when I told her about it, said that Natasha would not have wanted a funeral, “said the director. “She’s too intimate, and people don’t really know who she is anyway.” So, what we did in this film was to allow the end to be the grief felt by individuals, rather than a great public outpouring. I think it’s an end that suits him. “
Johansson said working with Pugh was like finding a “little sister” she never had
The Black Widow program of which Natasha is the product is mentioned in Avengers: Age of Ultron and also Agent Carter series on ABC. Yelena Belova de Pugh is someone who has worked so closely with Natasha and has a brotherly bond – perhaps even semi-romantic. So she naturally seems to be the best person to don the Avengers’ coat of “Black Widow”.
“I don’t have a little sister. But with Florence, I feel like there are elements of big sister, little sister, ”Johansson recently told Elle. This real-life camaraderie will also help sell the bond on the screen. Even if it is filled with tension.
“I wish I was as confident as she was when I was her age,” continued Johansson. “Her body is confident and has a lot of self-esteem. She reminded me – just by listening to her talk about her relationships with friends, family or partner – how important it is to have confidence in your beliefs and desires. “
The relationship of Yelena and Natasha in the comics is quite intense
The desire for a Black Widow solo film has grown since she was on screen for the first time just because she is so mysterious. The public only knows what Natasha wants them to do, and there is still much to imagine. But it is revealed that Natasha Romanoff did not always fight for worthy causes, and she was not inherently the right guy. Yelena, from the same Black Widow program, is in a similar boat.
And in the comics, their darkest sides stand out a lot. The two seem to be in a more tense relationship. There is even a story arc that shows Natasha surgically swapping faces with Yelena, without her consent. Things never went well between the two after that.
Who knows if the Black Widow the movie will get so dark, or how torn the relationship between the two widows is, but if Yelena gets Natasha’s “stick”, it’s safe to assume things will go better for them.
