Firefighters tackle a forest fire in the southwestern region of Gironde

More than 180 firefighters fought a forest fire that raged over nearly 250 hectares of pine trees in the southwest region of Gironde, France. It is the largest fire in the region to date this year. The fire, which broke out at 2 p.m. Monday, was brought under control late in the evening, according to the Nouvelle-Aquitaine prefecture.

“It is not progressing any further,” said firefighters, who will remain in place to ensure the fire does not restart.

The wind, the sandy soil and the young pines of the region made the forest fire “difficult” and “virulent”, underlined the captain of the firefighters Mathieu Jaumain.

The origin of the fire is unknown.

About fifty people had to be evacuated as a precaution at the end of the afternoon because of the dense smoke.

About a hundred fire trucks were mobilized.

The south-west of the Gironde has so far experienced a particularly dry and hot summer and further heat waves are expected in the coming weeks.
