“We have communicated to the Washington team our request to change the name of the team,” FedEx said in a statement Thursday evening.
FedEx would not comment further on the matter or report on the status of its team sponsorship, which belongs to Daniel Snyder, who long resisted calls for a name change. Frederick W. Smith, President and CEO of FedEx, is also a minority owner of the Redskins.
The Redskins did not immediately respond to requests for comment Thursday evening.
On the Nike retail website, the Washington Redskins were visibly missing from a drop-down menu for soccer jersey sales on Thursday. It was unclear whether this was an intentional omission, and Nike did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Last week, the Redskins removed the original owner of the team, George Preston Marshall, from the Ring of Fame in FedEx Field. The franchise, which was the last to join its list, also deleted Marshall’s name from its website.
The team said it would rename the lower bowl of the room to Bobby Mitchell, the first African-American star in the franchise.
