Dr Anthony Fauci, the country’s leading infectious disease specialist, said this week that wearing glasses or an eye shield in addition to a face mask would provide more comprehensive protection against the coronavirus, according to a report.
“Theoretically, you should protect all mucous surfaces [eyes, nose, mouth], so if you have glasses or eye protection you should use it, ”he said in an ABC News interview on Instagram Wednesday.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention already recommends wearing a face mask that covers your nose and mouth in public, but the virus can also enter through the eyes.
Fauci recommended goggles in addition to a face mask for those who want “perfect protection” against COVID-19, but admitted it is not “universally recommended.”
He added that one of the reasons the glasses have not yet been recommended is “it’s so easy for people to just make a cloth mask.”
Before the fall, Fauci said he encouraged people to get vaccinated against the flu and hoped the face masks would protect people from the flu as well as the coronavirus, ABC reported.
Not everyone has responded positively on social media to the idea of adding glasses to face masks. Some have pointed out that the next step would be to wear hazmat suits or live inside a bubble, according to Market Watch.
