Manchester City players were hurt by the nature of the Premier League defeat to Southampton this weekend, defender Eric Garcia said.City fell behind Che Adams’ long-range shot when he spotted Ederson out of his line after Aleks Zinchenko lost possession.

Despite dominating the rest of the game with 26 goals and 74% possession, City just couldn’t find a way to get past Alex McCarthy in the Saints’ goal. The loss was City’s ninth in the league this season and third away from home.

However, Garcia said that the fact that City dominated St Mary means that this defeat did more harm than most.

“We deserved more,” he said.

“In the first ten minutes it was a little bit more consistent, but after that we had control of the game, we had a lot of chances and we were disappointed. We have to watch the game back, but I think with the first goal we achieved everything except being lucky and scoring a goal.

“We knew they were going to start pushing very hard. With one goal down, we had to leave from the start. Having the chances we had and controlling their counterattacks, I thought we were doing pretty well.

“Obviously, if you are unlucky on these occasions, you lose the match. Any defeat hurts. This one probably hurts a little bit more because of everything we’ve done in the game, but every defeat hurts the same way. ”

Garcia also lifted the lid on Pep Guardiola’s half-time team discussions, City showing strong and creating clear opportunities, before the second half break slowed the pace.

“He just said to keep pushing,” said Garcia.

“Obviously we thought if we had the chance to score the first one, they would open up a bit so we could find more space, but that didn’t happen. Like I said, I think the team played very well.

“I think we were just unlucky. We hit the post several times, one against v against the goalkeeper, one in the first half where he saved three shots at once incredibly. We thank their goalkeeper. “
