Elon Musk to the miners: bring me more nickel

Electric vehicle visionary Elon Musk said he is asking mining companies to produce more nickel.

Musk made the comments during his second-quarter winning call earlier this week.

Musk said miners will be offered a giant contract from Tesla if they mine nickel in an efficient and “environmental” manner, according to a memo released by Tesmanian.

Tesla CEO will need more raw materials. Musk also announced on the call that his company’s next gigafactory would be built in Austin, Texas. Gigafactories manufactures batteries and cars. Tesla currently has Gigafactories in the United States, Europe and China.

Earlier this year, Tesla signed a contract with Glencore for cobalt. The company has reportedly tried to limit reliance on the material to reduce costs and avoid relying on a material linked to worker exploitation and environmental degradation.

The chemistry of cobalt generally gives lithium-ion batteries greater stability.

Green Car reports that Tesla is switching to another battery chemistry – high energy density nickel-cobalt-aluminum for its Semi production.

“Nickel-based cells have a higher energy density, therefore a longer range; these are needed for something like a Semi, where every unit of mass you add has to be subtracted as cargo, ”Musk said when calling the earnings.
