The discussion of the Eskimos’ name comes amid renewed pressure on the Washington Redskins to change their name. Owner Dan Snyder has announced that he will consider changing the name of the NFL team after FedEx Corp, which owns the naming rights for the team stadium, has called for a change of brand.
It is not the first time that the team name has been changed. Mayor Don Iveson told reporters in November 2017 that the team should consider changing his name after Winnipeg’s first Métis mayor Brian Bowman said he thought there was an opportunity for a name ” more inclusive ”.
In 2015, during the team’s Gray Cup race, Natan Obed, president of the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, an organization representing 60,000 Canadian Inuit, said the name should be changed, calling it “derogatory” ”
“It is not fair that a team is named after an ethnic group,” he said. “It is a thing of the past. It is not part of the present and should not be part of the future. ”
Arriving on Saturday, a spokesperson for the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami referred Postmedia to previous statements.
