Mr. Trump wore a black mask over his mouth and nose when he visited the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Saturday. He was at Bethesda, Maryland Institution to visit injured service personnel.

The president had previously fueled controversy by not wearing a mask while the US epidemic of COVID-19 has worsened in recent months.Speaking to reporters before the visit, Trump said, “I will probably have a mask if you need to know. I will probably have a mask.

“I think when you are in the hospital, especially in this particular context, where you talk to a lot of soldiers, people who, in some cases, have just left the operating table. I think it’s a good thing to wear a mask.

“I have never been against masks but I think they have a time and a place. “

Trump was only pictured wearing a mask once during a visit to a Michigan Ford plant in May, where ventilators and other medical equipment were being made.

But the president refused to bring one before the journalists so that they did not have “the pleasure of seeing it”.

Trump said, “I had one before. I was wearing one in the back area.

“I didn’t want to give the press the pleasure of seeing it.”

Prior to his visit to Michigan in May, Attorney General Dana Nessel compared Mr. Trump to a “petulant child who refuses to follow the rules.”

US centers for disease control urged US residents to wear masks or other face covers in April to slow the spread of COVID-19.

At the time, Mr. Trump declined to comment, “I don’t think I’m going to do it.

“Wear a mask to greet presidents, prime ministers, dictators, kings, queens – I just don’t see it. “

In an interview in June with the Wall Street Journal, Trump suggested that many of those who wore masks did so only as a political statement against him.

However, the president changed his mind earlier this month when he told Fox Business Network “I’m all for masks.”

When asked if he would wear a mask, Trump replied, “If I was in a tight spot with people, I would, absolutely. ”

Trump also claimed that wearing a mask made him look like the Long Ranger, a fictional masked character who operated in the American “Wild West”.

The United States has seen a dramatic increase in the number of coronavirus cases in recent weeks, with a record 66,000 new cases registered Friday according to Johns Hopkins University.

There are also concerns about the availability of intensive care beds in Texas and Florida.

Speaking to CNN, Peter Hotez, dean of tropical medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, said that if the United States continues its current trajectory, it will experience “one of the most unstable periods in the history of our country ”.

Referring to hospitals, he added: “We will not have enough manpower, human power, to manage all this. “
