Discovery ‘Season 3 –

Over the weekend, GalaxyCon hosted a Star Trek virtual event with Star Trek doctors Gates McFadden, John Billingsley, Alexander Siddig and Robert Picardo. A last minute addition to the event was Star Trek: Discovery Wilson Cruz, who spoke a bit about the coming season.

Cruz talks about the captain’s chair in season three

Wilson Cruz was trying to be very careful not to drop spoilers during the online chat and mainly focused on the first two seasons of his work on Discovery, but there was a point when he may have given us a clue: when a fan asked the group what other position on their ships would have shown that it was difficult to act, Cruz said the following:

I just let Sonequa make sure – all the captains – to make sure they keep an eye on this captain’s chair. That’s all I’m saying.

The question of who will be the captain of the USS Discovery in season three has been the subject of much debate. In his response, Cruz began by stating that Sonequa Martin-Green’s commander, Michael Burnham, would eventually take the big chair, but halfway through his response, he stopped and inserted “all the captains”, perhaps be like an attempt to reverse any potential three spoiler season.

When the USS Discovery was last seen at the end of season two, it was under the command of Commander Saru (Doug Jones), who led the ship through the wormhole for 900 years. Doug Jones told TrekMovie in May that the captain’s choice is up to Saru and Burnham. “We are both capable. Who will get it is still a mystery that comes in season three, “he said.

In this regard, it is worth mentioning an upcoming issue of Star Trek magazine. Due in September, issue 77 features an interview titled “Starship Mine! Doug Jones to assume command. Some may see this as a clue; however, the season two trailer indicates that Burnham and the Discovery remain separate for a year after their arrival in the future, during which time Saru likely remains the de facto commander of the ship. Jonathan Frakes has already confirmed that Burnham will not find the ship until the third episode of the season.

More doctoring and maybe cool medtech from the 32nd century

During the panel, Cruz also said how happy he was that the second season explored Culber’s death and return and “had an effect on him and changed him in one way or another. ” Asked about the favorite episodes of his doctor character, he explained how this change will affect Culber professionally:

In [season 3] is probably my favorite scraping episode. I can’t say much about it, but we can see how he changed and how he is a different doctor because of what he went through.

The actors also talked about some of the challenges they faced with all of the medical accessories in their shows. For his part, Cruz revealed that for the season two finale, he had to continue to remake the climax emotional scene where he saves the life of Paul Stamets because he continued to mix his medical tricorder with another medical instrument and had to start the “choreography” again. Cruz started talking about season three again, but stopped with:

There are so many things I want to say because we are going a thousand years into the future for season three. There are so many things I want to say about what we do now, but I can’t.

We know the show will showcase future technology as there were new elements spied on in the season three trailer, although these are more on the gun side than the medical.

But when does season 3 arrive?

The big question of the third season of Discovery is the release date. It was a bit of a surprise last week that the new animated series Star Trek: lower decks got an official launch date (August 6) before we have a date for Discovery. CBS ‘official announcement regarding Lower deckits stated that Discovery “Was coming back with season three later this year.” While Discovery could arrive as early as October to land after Lower decks concludes his series of 10 episodes, it is more likely that we will have to wait for November or even December.
