It’s a hallmark of long-distance train travel for decades, but the buffet car may be on track for a gradual decline as food is delivered directly to passengers.
The London North Eastern Railway (LNER) offers to bring snacks, drinks and hot meals to seats as part of Britain’s first digital ‘waiter service’ for trains. Passengers will be able to order and pay via its smartphone application.
The service will be available from next month to passengers in standard and first-class wagons on three of the company’s trains operating on the East Coast Main Line. It will roll out later this year and is designed to appeal to single travelers or people with laptops and other valuables who don’t want to leave their seats.
