Johnny Depp said Tuesday his ex-wife Amber Heard had made “sick” allegations and falsely called him a monster, as the actor testified in a UK defamation case that depends on who was the aggressor in the violent and toxic relationship of the celebrity couple
Depp is suing the British tabloid The Sun about an April 2018 story called “Potty – How can JK Rowling be” really happy “by beating his drummer Johnny Depp in the new movie Fantastic Beasts?”
The “Pirates of the Caribbean” star firmly denies Heard’s claims that he assaulted her during their tumultuous marriage and sued The News editor, News Group Newspapers, and its editor, Dan Wootton.
“These allegations of illness are completely untrue,” Depp said in a written statement from a witness, adding that Heard’s allegations had hurt his career and “been a constant problem in my cast.”
A three-week trial for his defamation allegations opened on Tuesday. The trial is one of the first to be held in person since Britain began lifting its coronavirus lockdown.
Depp entered the witness room in the paneled courtroom wearing a dark suit and tie, and began by taking the oath of hearing and giving his full name: John Christopher Depp II.
He told the court that Heard had “told the world that she feared her life for me, and that I had been that horrible monster, if you will. Which was not the case. ”
Depp, 57, and Heard, 34, met on the set of the 2011 comedy “The Rum Diary” and married in Los Angeles in February 2015. They divorced in 2017, and are now accusing each other bitterly. each other of abuse.
Depp and Heard arrived through separate entrances to the Neo-Gothic courthouse. Both wore face covers over their noses and mouths upon arrival. The procedures were distributed in several courtrooms to allow social distancing.
Although Heard is not being tried, the case is also a confrontation between the ex-spouses, who accuse each other of being controlling, violent and untrue. He should place the complex privacy of the two performers under a microscope.
Defense of the Sun builds on Heard’s allegations of 14 incidents of Depp violence between 2013 and 2016, in places like Los Angeles, Australia, Japan, The Bahamas and a chartered plane. He denies them all and says that Heard, an actress and model, attacked him with items like a drink can and a cigarette. He also claims that on one occasion Heard or one of his friends defecated on his bed.
In written witness statements, Depp said that in Australia in 2015, Heard cut off his fingertip by tossing him a bottle of vodka. A photo of the bloody figure was attached to his witness statement.
Depp testified that Heard had repeatedly struck him in the face on another occasion in a private jet, forcing him to pass the flight locked up in the aircraft bathroom.
“Violent incidents of aircraft rage were common with Amber,” he said in the written statement.
Describing an incident in which Heard claims to have hit her, Depp said the opposite was true.
“As things tended to do, (they) intensified and became physical, ending with a bit of aggression. Ms. Heard hit me, ”he said.
He portrayed himself as a peacemaker who tried to withdraw from conflicts “before things got out of hand”.
In a written statement, Depp alleged that Heard was “a diagnosed and calculating borderline personality; she is a sociopath; she is a narcissist; and she’s completely emotionally dishonest. ”
“I am now convinced that she came into my life to take everything that was worth it and then destroy what was left of it,” said Depp.
Heard alleged that Depp was prone to violent rages fueled by alcohol and drugs.
In cross-examination by Sun’s attorney Sasha Wass, Depp admitted having taken a myriad of drugs over the years, including marijuana, cocaine, LSD, ecstasy, magic mushrooms and prescription pain relievers.
He said that his drug use started when he was an 11-year-old child and that “his life at home was not particularly stable, safe or secure.” He said it was “the only way I found to numb the pain.”
Wass also attempted to describe Depp as someone with anger management issues, causing a 1989 arrest for assault and a subsequent incident in which he damaged a hotel room in New York.
“I was angry, but that doesn’t mean I have an angry problem,” said Depp.
Wass played a Heard-recorded video clip of Depp kicking kitchen cabinets and swearing before pouring red wine into a large bottle.
While saying he was “not particularly proud of me” on the video, Depp denied that it showed that he had become a “monster” when he was drinking and taking drugs,
“It is not Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” he said.
Heard is scheduled to testify later in the trial. Depp’s lawyer David Sherborne said Heard recently requested that an allegation be heard in private “because of its allegedly horrible nature”.
Depp’s witnesses are expected to include former partners Vanessa Paradis and Winona Ryder who both submitted statements supporting him.
Depp is also suing Heard in the United States for $ 50 million for defaming him in a Washington Post article on domestic violence. The case is expected to be heard next year.
Sherborne said in an opening statement that the actor had taken action against The Sun for “erasing his reputation.”
“It is not about money,” he said. “It’s about justification. “
