Copenhagen hesitates to host the start of the Tour de France 2021

COPENHAGEN: The planned departure of the Tour de France in Copenhagen in 2021 is in question after the city’s mayor said on Friday July 24 that he wanted to postpone due to clashes with other sporting events.

“It’s more and more likely that it will be in 2022,” Mayor Frank Jensen told Danish television. “And more and more improbable for 2021.”

The 2021 Tour must now come up against the postponed Football Euros, which include four matches in Copenhagen, the last of them on June 26.

The Grand Départ of the Tour would have been a time trial in Copenhagen on July 2 with two other Danish stages on July 3 and 4, but the Tour had asked to bring the start forward by a week to avoid straddling the Olympics. of Tokyo reprogrammed.

Jensen acknowledged that the postponement would result in “an additional payment” by his city to ASO, the organizers of the Tour.

Discussions on this compensation “started yesterday”.

Jensen added that doesn’t mean Tour won’t come to Copenhagen or Denmark.

“It will come,” he said.

In a letter to ASO published on July 1 by the Danish newspaper BT, Jensen said that “it was not a realistic solution to bring the dates of the Grand Départ forward by a week”.

He said the shock with the euros would mean “major changes in the route from Copenhagen, as it will no longer be possible to go through the more central parts of the city center”.
