McGregor took advantage of Twitter to offer his condolences to his great rival.
“The loss of a father, a coach and a devoted supporter of the sport,” wrote the Irishman. “Condolences and rest in peace Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov”.
The death was announced by Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, as reported by RT, with a message that said: “Sad news has reached me, my friends, that Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov has left this world.
“From all Chechens, I offer my sincere condolences to the family of Abdulmanap! He left us, leaving a good name and raising a worthy generation!
Abdulmanap fell ill in April with symptoms of pneumonia and his condition deteriorated.
He was then flown to Moscow hospital where he tested positive for coronavirus, then suffered a heart attack before undergoing bypass surgery.
Khabib and his father were incredibly close and the fighter was trained from an early age
The veteran coach was then plunged into a medical coma and, when he regained consciousness, would have difficulty with his speech and, according to Kadyrov, has since died.
Family friend Ramazan Rabadanov told Championat Russian media: ‘Abdulmanap suffered two blows, [a heart attack] and the brain.
“They managed to treat his heart, but not his brain, so he did not come out of a coma.
“The situation was too serious, it was already too late.
“The doctors did everything they could, they even tried to put him in touch with the president [Putin], but his condition was too serious.

Abdulmanap was incredibly close to Khabib, whom he has trained in Sambo and wrestling since the UFC lightweight champion was a little boy, even though his son fought cubs.
He was denied a visa to travel to the Khabib fighting in the United States, but was present last year in Abu Dhabi to see the title defense against Dustin Poirier.
Khabib recently revealed that he visits his father every day in the hospital.
He said, “I’m visiting him, he recognizes me, but there is no communication because he is connected to [medical] devices.

“Every day they let me in, I spend half an hour [with him], I hold her hand. When I ask, “Father, do you recognize me? He gestures and lets me know.
After learning that Abdulmanap was in a coma, McGregor sent his best wishes on Twitter.
He wrote: “Pray for the recovery of Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. A man responsible for more world champions, in several combat disciplines, than we even know.
“A true martial genius! Very sad to hear this news tonight. Pray for the Nurmagomedov family right now. ”
Abdulmanap was the most influential presence on his son’s career and even transformed the ground floor of the family home into a gym so that Khabib could train all day.
Some have given him the nickname “Father of Dagestan MMA” with a disproportionately high number of talented fighters emerging from the region, often under his tutelage.
Khabib is expected to defend his title against Justin Gaethje later this year, which will no doubt take on another emotional weight for the champion now with the death of his father.
