Client leaves $ 1,000 tip to restaurant staff to thank them for working during the pandemic

Arnold Teixeira, owner of The Starving Artist at Ocean Grove, told CNN that the client had been a regular customer since 2001. He did not want to reveal his identity.

“The client and his family ate their meal and left without saying a word,” said Teixeira. “When the waiter serving them saw the tip, she just started crying. Then another member of my staff saw it and started to cry too. And then I see it, and I couldn’t help but cry. It was just extremely emotional. Because it was a really difficult time for us. ”

The client was having breakfast last week at The Starving Artist, who just celebrated his 21st birthday, when he left the massive tip with a comforting note.

“Thank you very much for going through this difficult period,” says the note.

“We are grateful for your delicious food, your warm smiles and your good atmosphere … Please know that we all appreciate you very much.” It wouldn’t be a good summer without the hungry artist, ”added the bucket.

At the end of the note, the client asked that the tip of $ 1,000 be shared among the entire staff. Teixeira shared it among its seven staff members – not counting himself.

Longtime restaurant owner, a beloved favorite of local and summer crowds in Ocean Grove, said he wasn’t even sure he would be able to keep the business open after the pandemic forced it to close in March.

“Things kept getting worse. To the point where I was preparing for the possibility that we could not reopen again. And now we don’t even do 50% of what we usually bring in the middle of the summer season, “said Teixeira.

“But this trick has restored our hope for humanity. It made us feel so good about what we do. We go through many steps to protect our customers, and it becomes exhausting after a while, but now we know that our efforts have actually been noticed. ”
