Buzz training camp: Hamilton misses Hurricanes practice

Carolina hurricanes

Dougie Hamilton did not practice Thursday, a day after leaving training early.

As part of the NHL’s return-to-play plan, a team is not permitted to disclose information about a player’s injury or illness.

“He’s a talented player, very unique on the attacking side,” coach Rod Brind’Amour said of the defenseman. “He certainly missed when he was away a lot of the year. He’s a big part of our team’s offense. We hope this is not a long term thing. ”

Hamilton broke his left fibula on Jan. 16 and has not played in the regular season, but has been skating since May. He scored 40 points (14 goals, 26 assists) in 47 games before the season was cut short on March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus.

The Hurricanes have acquired defenders Sami Vatanen (New Jersey Devils) et Brady Skjei (New York Rangers) in trades Feb. 24.

«Spoon it [Vatanen] you have to really understand our system, “said Brind’Amour.” But they are such good players that once the games start I think they will be fine. At this time, there are still lessons going on. ”

Bruins de Boston

With Ondrej Kase having missed most of training camp, the Bruins could use another player in their place in the roster early in qualifying.

“We’re two practices here before we get to Toronto, so he has some catching up to do,” said coach Bruce Cassidy. “So yeah, if we feel he’s not caught up … that’s the direction we’ll go.”

Kase, who was acquired in a trade with the Anaheim Ducks on Feb.21, had a six-game assist with Boston before the break. The Bruins, who were hoping they could play the right winger on the second row, rotated players there during camp, including rookies. Jack Studnicka and Karson Kuhlman. Anders Bjork, who filled in for David Pastrnak on the top row, could also be an option.

Kase missed the camp’s first two practices while meeting quarantine conditions for players arriving from Europe before hitting the ice on July 15 after training ended. He has missed every practice since then, being deemed “unfit to participate”.

Cassidy said Bjork (58 games played this season) and Kuhlman (25 games) would be the top two picks. Kuhlman played eight Stanley Cup Playoff games with the Bruins last season.

Defender Charlie McAvoy and forward Joakim Nordstrom returned to practice. Pastrnak, who missed the first two days of quarantine camp, has trained once since training camp opened on July 13.

Rangers of New York

The Rangers won’t name their starting goalie for qualifying until the day before or the day of their first game, coach David Quinn said.

Beginner Igor Shesterkin, Henrik Lundqvist and Alexandar Georgiev each has a chance to start when the Rangers take on the Carolina Hurricanes. The first game of the best-of-5 series will take place in Toronto on August 1.

“It really is and will continue to be an open assessment,” Quinn said. “There are a lot of things that go into the way we do this. ”

Shesterkin, who appeared to take over as Rangers’ No.1 goalie before the season break, occupied his own net over the last two days of training with Lundqvist and Georgiev sharing the net at the other end, although Quinn said it wasn’t. This is not an indication that a decision has already been made.

“We’ve got eight more days, nine more days before we play for real,” Quinn said, “and those eight or nine days are going to count. ” – Dan Rosen

Philadelphia Flyers

Goalie Carter Hart did not train with the Flyers for the second straight day, but faced shots after a scrum.

“The reason we didn’t put him into practice today is because it was a scrum and he hadn’t skated for two days,” said coach Alain Vigneault. “We thought it was smarter… to take him out on his own and let him take a good number of hits, and he came out, feeling good. Everything should be good for tomorrow. ”

The Flyers had goalkeepers Brian Elliott, Alex Lyon and Kirill Ustimenko available for the scrum. Ustimenko missed training on Wednesday.

Upscale center Sean Couturier did not skate after his wife gave birth on Wednesday.

The Flyers face the Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning and Washington Capitals in the qualifying round robin. Their first game is against the Bruins in Toronto on August 2.

Blackhawks de Chicago

Jonathan Toews returned to practice.

The center was declared “unfit to participate” on Tuesday, missing training and a scrum, after leaving training early Monday. The Blackhawks were gone Wednesday.

The Blackhawks face the Edmonton Oilers in a best-of-five qualifying series in Edmonton, the central Western Conference city, starting Aug. 1.

Vegas Golden Knights

Max Pacioretty is expected to join the Golden Knights before training camp ends this week.

The forward was judged “unfit to participate” Wednesday, the second consecutive session where he was off the ice.

“I told you a few days ago [it wasn’t a positive COVID-19 test]”Said coach Peter DeBoer.” He’s struggling with a minor issue. I expect he will be on the ice with us here before we leave for Edmonton (Sunday). ”

Nick Cousins took Pacioretty’s place as the front row left winger, skating with the center William Karlsson and forward Mark Stone.

Pacioretty has been listed as week after week with a lower body injury before the season break. In his second season with the Golden Knights, he led them in goals (32) and points (66).

The Golden Knights will face the Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars and St. Louis Blues in the round robin game of qualifying to determine the Western Conference standings for the playoffs. The Golden Knights’ opener is against the Stars in Edmonton on August 3. – Danny Webster
