Brazilian President Bolsonaro says he’s recovered from coronavirus

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said on Saturday that he had tested negative for the new coronavirus, having passed a fourth test since announcing on July 7 that he had the virus.“Hello everyone,” Bolsonaro wrote on Facebook after reporting the test was “negative”.

He posted a photo of himself with a box of hydroxychloroquine, an antimalarial drug, whose effectiveness against the virus has not been proven.

Now that Bolsonaro is virus free, he is expected to return to mingle with the crowd like he did before.

Shortly after disclosing the negative result, Bolsonaro left the presidential residence on a motorcycle. Accompanied by security guards, he went to a motorcycle shop. On his way out, he took pictures with people nearby, removed his mask and put on his helmet.

Returning to Alvorada Palace, his official residence, Bolsonaro greeted the motorcyclists and met with them to take photos.

He has spent many weekends since the COVID-19 outbreak near supporters, sometimes without wearing a mask.

On Thursday, he was pictured without a mask as he spoke to sweepers in the garden of the presidential residence.

Brazil, the largest country in Latin America, is the second country most affected by COVID-19, after the United States.

According to the Brazilian government, on Friday there were more than 85,000 confirmed deaths from COVID-19. The country has more than 2,343,000 confirmed cases, but the actual numbers are believed to be higher.

On Monday, two other ministers in Bolsonaro’s cabinet said they tested positive for the coronavirus: 65-year-old Citizenship Minister Onyx Lorenzoni and Milton Ribeiro, the 62-year-old Minister of Education.

Bolsonaro’s administration last week ended two months without a health minister.

The acting minister, General Eduardo Pazuello, who had no experience on the ground until April, is facing pressure to leave his post.

He took over after his predecessor, a doctor and health care consultant, resigned to protest Bolsonaro’s support for the use of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine, as a treatment for COVID-19.
