The association, known as ABI, alleged that Bolsonaro did not respect the safety distance from journalists, and removed his mask during Tuesday’s televised press conference in the capital, Brasilia , where he announced that he had tested positive for Covid-19.
The ABI statement accuses Bolsonaro of endangering the lives of the journalists present. “The country cannot observe continuous behavior which is beyond irresponsibility and constitutes obvious crimes against public health, without reacting,” said the president of the association, Paulo Jeronimo de Souza.
Three television channels – CNN Brasil, TV Record and TV Brasil – were present at the press conference. CNN Brasil reporter Leandro Magalhaes will be tested for the virus on Wednesday and works from home until he gets the result.
After Tuesday’s press conference, MP Marcelo Freixo tweeted that he had filed a complaint against Bolsonaro with the federal prosecutor’s office. “The president violated articles 131 and 132 of the Criminal Code by removing his mask during the interview during which he announced that he had the coronavirus,” said Freixo.
Foreign Minister Ernesto Araújo, Defense Minister, General Fernando Azevedo, and Government Secretary General Jorge Oliveira, have also been tested for the virus and are awaiting results, according to their offices.
