BAFTA TV Awards to give viewers a glimpse of stars in their natural habitats | Ents & Arts News

They might not get the fancy red carpet treatment, but the stars of our favorite shows will still be present – albeit virtually – for the BAFTA TV Awards tonight.

Shelves full of heavy books? An informal display of previous years’ awards and shows? Messy kitchens and impromptu visits to children and pets? This year, viewers will be able to see the BAFTA nominees in their natural habitats.

After winning seven awards earlier this month at the organization craft prize, celebrating technical achievement, HBO / Sky Atlantic’s Chernobyl is one of the favorites for the biggest wins tonight.

Telling the story of the nuclear disaster at the Ukraine plant on April 26, 1986, the overall cast of the five-part series includes Jared Harris and Stellan Skarsgard, who are nominated for lead actor and supporting actor.

It’s also in the running for Best Miniseries, with three nominations in total; BAFTA wins would follow a huge success at last year’s Emmys, where he won 19 awards.

Director Johan Renck told Sky News everyone involved was “pretty dumbfounded by the reception,” but that “whether by chance, by zeitgeist or by timing, right now people wanted something of this nature. “.

Other favorites include the Netflix royal saga The Crown and comedy Phoebe Waller-Bridge Fleabag, which are also up for grabs for multiple awards.

The Crown is nominated for Best Drama Series, Supporting Actor (Josh O’Connor) and Supporting Actress (Helena Bonham Carter); somewhat controversial, Olivia Colman missed out on a spot on the leading actress list for her portrayal of the Queen on the show, despite winning a Golden Globe earlier in the year and a nomination for the next one. Emmys in the USA.

Fleabag is on the shortlist for Best Scripted Comedy, while Waller-Bridge and his onscreen sister Sian Clifford are both shortlisted for Best Female Performance in a Comedy Program Award. The BBC show is also up for a new audience-voted gong, the unmissable moment, for his famous “hot priest” confessional scene.

Other shows competing for the awards include Shane Meadows’ tough drama, The Virtues, Giri / Haji thriller, and Netflix comedy Sex Education.

In the news category, Sky News coverage of the Hong Kong protests will come up against Emily Maitlis’ infamous interview with Prince Andrew on the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, ITV election night coverage and a Victoria special. Derbyshire on knife crime.

And there was a bit of upheaval in the continuing soap operas and drama category, with EastEnders left off the shortlist; Coronation Street and Emmerdale made the cut, with medical dramas Casualty and Holby City.

The televised BAFTA ceremony was originally scheduled to take place on May 17, but was postponed due to coronavirus crisis.

Tonight’s event will take the form of a closed studio, social-distancing show, with nominees accepting their prizes virtually – wifi permitting – and airing on BBC One from 7pm.

Richard Ayoade will host the show, with Hollywood star Idris Elba receiving the special award – one of BAFTA’s highest accolades – for his creative contribution to television and his work promoting diversity and new talent in the industry.

But without a red carpet, will stars still dress?

“A dressing gown and a cup of coffee,” Chernobyl nominee Harris said in a pre-awards question-and-answer session, but Jasmine Jobson, nominee for Best Supporting Actress for Top Boy, plans to make an effort.

“Just because I’m not going to be on a red carpet doesn’t mean I can’t dress,” she said.

Whether the stars are dressed in fancy dresses or pajamas, this year’s televised BAFTAs are sure to be unforgettable.
