AVENGERS: ENDGAME almost had an army of giant ants

The final battle in Avengers: Endgame remains the ultimate superhero fight scene in movie history. The Russo Brothers pushed every hero in the MCU, their friends, then the kitchen sink to protect Earth from Thanos’ forces. At one point in the film’s story process, it was even cooler. Jackson Sze, a senior visual development artist at Marvel Studios, graced Instagram with artwork from the End of Game development process. This concept art featured several of Ant-Man’s flying ants, all giant in size and attacking one of Thanos’ leviathans. You can see Sze’s concept art for the ants vs aliens scene above.

The scene in question ended up not making the cut. This decisive battle was already crowded, and it could have been confusing if many more elements had been added. But it would’ve been the closest thing to a kaiju battle the MCU has seen, at least so far. Sze posted other unused End of Game concepts to his Instagram, the one that featured a large ant covered in wooden armor, created by Groot!

Other unused concepts from End of Game finale are also up on Sze’s Instagram, as a moment featuring the “Avengers creature,” aka Meek and Korg. Another featured Okoye and Valkyrie leading their respective armies side by side, in what surely would have been a crowd pleaser. Wouldn’t it have been cool to see these two badass ladies having a time together like this?

Many MCU concepts that don’t make the final cut for a given movie can sometimes work in later projects. So it’s not out of the question that we might see some of these scenes popping up somewhere, in one form or another, down the line. Otherwise, Sze’s art is a beautiful window into what could have been.
