Avalon Healthcare partnership chosen to build and manage Waterford replacement

The provincial government contracted with a consortium to design, build and manage the new mental health and addictions facility adjacent to the Health Sciences Center in St. John’s.Avalon Healthcare Partnership – a consortium of several entities including Marco Ltd and the Cahill Group – will oversee everything. It will replace Waterford in about five years, but there will be fewer beds than the current facility.

Health Minister John Haggie says it’s because they are moving towards community care. The new hospital will be a six-story, 240,000 square foot facility with capacity for 102 beds.

The estimated value of the hospital contract is $ 330 million.

The actual construction could start next spring, but work on the site will begin this year, so the HSC area will be a very busy place with many challenges.

The new hospital will include a replacement Agnes Cowan hostel and 1,000-unit parking.

Prime Minister Dwight Ball said many have said they want to do this project, but only his government has said they will.
