At least 14 people injured in mass shooting outside funeral in Auburn Gresham – CBS Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) – At least 14 people were injured on Tuesday evening in a mass shooting aimed at people attending funerals in the community of Auburn Gresham.Chicago Police Deputy Superintendent. Eric Carter said a black vehicle was heading west on 79th Street at 6:30 p.m. when people inside began shooting at a funeral. The funeral was held at a funeral home at 1018 W. 79th St.

Funeral attendees began to fire back at the vehicle, which turned north on Carpenter Street and continued to shoot people at the funeral before crashing halfway down the block.

The occupants got out and fled in several directions, Carter said.

A person of interest was interviewed on Tuesday evening.

Carter said 14 victims were taken to five hospitals under unknown conditions. At least 60 shell casings have been located.

The fire department said at least nine people were transported by ambulances from the scene. The fire department said Advocate Christ Medical Center and the University of Chicago Medical Center received most of the casualties.

Firefighters said two more victims were found near 63rd Street and were self-transporting, for a total of 11 transports.

The fire department said a woman had been shot several times and the patients they were carrying ranged from serious to critical condition.

Sources said there was some sort of planned ambush outside the funeral home.

The funeral was for Donnie Weathersby, who was shot dead last Tuesday, July 14, at 74th Street and Stewart Avenue in Englewood. Weathersby was shot in the chest and head, CBS 2’s Charlie De Mar reported.

Sources told Edwards that police have been warned there may be a retaliatory strike at the funeral service. Carter said a squad car was assigned to the funeral, but because of its size.

De Mar spoke to people at the scene who said they were inside the funeral home when the shooting started. He spoke to a woman who had blood on her jeans and did not know who they belonged to.

De Mar learns that some victims have entered hospitals and that officers have even taken some victims to hospitals, sources told CBS 2’s Jermont Terry.

Some people were treated in front of the Cookie’s Cocktail Lounge located at 1024 W. 79th St.

The shooting took place in the Gresham Police District (6th). Officers from the Englewood (7th) and Grand Crossing (4th) Districts, sources told Edwards.

Some members of the police in military fatigues were also seen.

Crime statistics indicate that there were 13 murders last month in the region, up from three in June 2019. There were five murders in the region last week.
