In just four days, another million cases of the new coronavirus were confirmed worldwide, bringing the global total to 14 million on Friday.With more than 200,000 cases reported daily in the past week and a half, the pace has picked up, even beyond the five days between millions of milestones earlier this month.

The 14 million mark was reached a day after the world hit a new daily record of 252,500 new confirmed cases, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Public health data compiled and monitored by the university showed 14,037,021 confirmed cases worldwide as of 9 p.m. ET. The global death toll from the COVID-19 respiratory disease has reached 600,665.

Experts said the actual number of cases could be up to 10 times higher than what has been confirmed, due to wide gaps in testing in the early stages of the pandemic.

In the past four days, Brazil has passed 2 million cases, while India has become the third country in the world to strike 1 million infections.

The most infected country in the world, the United States, has been breaking daily case records for several consecutive days, as almost all 50 states are now experiencing peaks in infections and hospitalizations.

The country has now recorded more than 3.6 million cases and nearly 140,000 deaths.

As other heavily infected countries like Russia and even Brazil have started to stabilize, new hot spots have developed.

Once nearly virus-free South Africa has exploded over the past week to become the sixth most infected country on the planet, with more than 330,000 cases.

Colombia just set a new record for daily infections with nearly 21,000 new cases on Thursday, while Bangladesh and Indonesia are also seeing increases.

Australia had to lock out its most populous states after a second wave of cases destroyed its chances of becoming virus-free.

And in Japan, where Tokyo has experienced a new explosion of infections, the capital has been excluded from a new domestic tourism campaign, provoking a violent return against the government.

Even countries that have had relative success in reducing their infections, such as Canada, experienced slight increases this week amid softening travel restrictions and new stages of economic reopening.

These reopenings continue around the world, including the UK, which has the third highest death toll in the world behind the United States and Brazil.
