Amber Heard “was verbally and physically assaulted,” said bodyguard Johnny Depp at trial

Johnny Depp security chief alleged Thursday that Amber Heard physically assaulted Depp during the couple’s tumultuous marriage, testifying to support Depp’s defamation lawsuit against a British tabloid who accused him of assaulting his former spouse. The attorneys also released statements from two of Depp’s former romantic partners, Winona Ryder and Vanessa Paradis, who said that they could not reconcile the charges of Heard’s violence with the kind and loving man they knew.

Depp is suing News Group Newspapers, the publisher of The Sun, and the newspaper’s editor, Dan Wootton, for an April 2018 article that called him “a drummer for women.” He firmly denies having abused Heard.

In a written witness statement released during his court appearance, safety officer Sean Bett stated that “throughout the relationship between Mr. Depp and Ms. Heard, Ms. Heard was verbally and physically abusive to Mr. Depp ”.

“On several occasions, I witnessed his cries against Mr. Depp. Mr. Depp also told me on several occasions that Ms. Heard physically abused him, “he said.

Bett, a former Los Angeles Sheriff’s assistant who has worked for Depp for a decade, said he has to regularly remove the Pirates of the Caribbean star of bad situations where Heard was in a “bad mood”.

“Ms. Heard often behaved this way when she was drinking. I quickly learned to recognize the signs, so that we can get out of the situation before it escalates, ”he said.

Depp, 57, and Heard, 34, met on the set of the 2011 comedy The Rum Diary and married in Los Angeles in February 2015. Heard filed for divorce the following year, and the divorce was finalized in 2017.

Defense of the Sun is based on 14 allegations made by Heard of violence by Depp between 2013 and 2016, in contexts including his private island in the Bahamas, a house rented in Australia and a private jet. He denies them all and claims that Heard was the abuser during their volatile relationship, which he compared to “a crime scene waiting to happen.”

In a week and a half of testimony, Justice Andrew Nicol heard from Depp – who accused Heard of having made a case of false allegations against him – as well as several employees of Depp and Heard who supported his version of the events.

Heard will give her side of the story when she is scheduled to enter the witness booth next week. The trial, which began in early July, is expected to last three weeks.

Bett was cross-examined on Thursday by Sun’s attorney Sasha Wass, who questioned his claim that he had never seen Heard with bruises on his face or body but had seen Depp repeatedly with bruises inflicted by his wife.

Wass suggested that Bett was lying to protect his employer Depp.

“Madam, you can call me a liar a hundred times. I am not a liar. I’m telling the truth, ”said Bett.

No need to call on Paradis, Ryder

Depp’s former romantic partners Vanessa Paradis and Winona Ryder were scheduled to testify, but Depp’s lawyer said on Thursday that they would no longer appear.

David Sherborne said Thursday that he no longer had to call them, “as it would have been a pleasure to have them here,” as The Sun does not dispute Depp’s claim that he never hit them .

Depp and French singer Paradis had two children during a 14-year relationship that ended in 2012. American actress Ryder dated Depp between 1990 and 1993.

In a written witness statement partially disclosed at a preliminary hearing, Ryder said that Depp “was never, never violent to me. He was never, never abusive at all towards me ”. She added that she was “shocked, confused and upset” when hearing the charges against Depp.

“I don’t want to call anyone a liar but from my experience with Johnny, it is impossible to believe that such horrific allegations are true,” she added.

Paradis said in a witness statement that she had always known that Depp was “a kind, caring, generous, non-violent person and father.”

She said the allegations of Heard’s abuse were “nothing like the real Johnny I have known, and from my personal experience over many years, I can say that he was never violent or abusive towards me. “
