Alberta records 80 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, 2 more deaths


Alberta Health on Tuesday announced 80 more cases of COVID-19 that have been confirmed in the province, as well as two more deaths.Active cases in Alberta are now at 1,397, down slightly from Monday’s active number of 1,430.

The two deaths reported on Tuesday were both in the Edmonton area, the first being a man in his 60s linked to the Misericordia Community Hospital outbreak. He passed away over the weekend and is now added to the provincial tally. Alberta Health said his death was announced by the center on Monday but was just registered today.

The second death announced Tuesday is a man in his 80s linked to the outbreak at the Good Samaritan Society Southgate Care Center.

The total number of recorded deaths in the province is now 187. That number only increases by one from the previous day, as a previously reported COVID-19 death in the Calgary area has now been determined as n ‘not being linked to the disease, according to Alberta Health.

By region, the Calgary and Edmonton areas remain the regions with the highest number of active cases in the province.

The Calgary area has 710 active cases, 5,583 recoveries and 114 deaths. There were a slightly higher number of new cases (+50) in the Calgary area compared to the number of new cases (+30).

In the Edmonton area, active cases are now at 276, recoveries are at 1,260 and there have been 39 deaths. The Edmonton area saw 19 new recoveries and 18 more cases on Tuesday.

In other areas, the central area now has a total of 156 active cases, 172 recoveries and one death. The North zone has 107 active cases, 391 recoveries and 17 deaths. The South zone has 140 active cases, 1,460 recoveries and 16 deaths.

There are also eight other active cases and 20 recovered cases associated with unknown areas.

The number of Albertans hospitalized remained similar to the day before, with 88 people admitted (without change) and 16 of them in intensive care (-1 since Monday).

On Tuesday, four additional outbreaks were also declared by the province:

  • Italian Bakery (118 Avenue), Edmonton area
  • Shepherd’s Gardens Heritage, Edmonton area
  • DOT Logistics, zone de Calgary
  • The Keg Steakhouse and Bar, South Pointe, zone de Calgary

The province has now performed 659,242 COVID-19 tests on Albertans.
