Indian actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan tested positive for coronavirus, a day after her stepfather and fellow actor, Amitabh Bachchan, and her husband, Abhishek, also both actors, were admitted to hospital for Covid -19.Rajesh Tope, Minister of Health for the State of Maharastra, tweeted that Rai Bachchan and his eight-year-old daughter had tested positive. However, it is not clear whether the actress was admitted to the hospital, as her husband and stepfather were on Saturday, with what they said were mild symptoms.

Hospital officials and government health officials said on Sunday that the two were in stable condition.

Rai Bachchan, 46, has worked on several Bollywood and Hollywood films and is brand ambassador for several multinational companies.

On Sunday, India recorded a record increase in cases of coronavirus, bringing its total number to nearly 850,000 and forcing the authorities to reimpose a partial foreclosure in some densely populated areas of the country.

Data from the Federal Ministry of Health has shown that more than 27,100 new cases have been reported in the past 24 hours, while the number of deaths has risen to 22,674 after 551 people died of Covid-19 in a day.

Amitabh Bachachan, one of India’s best-known actors, tweeted Saturday night that he had tested positive. Within minutes, his son Abhishek, 44, tweeted that he had also tested positive.

Both were transferred to Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai despite mild symptoms. The two men called on their millions of fans to remain calm.

Authorities launched a massive sanitation exercise at Bachchan’s Mumbai home, spraying disinfectant in the large complex and on parked cars.

Amitabh Bachchan, 77, has been a prominent figure in the fight against coronavirus by appearing in public service advertisements in which he urges people to wear a mask, wash their hands frequently and maintain physical distance.

The Indian film industry recently resumed filming after a hiatus of several months after a nationwide lockdown was imposed in late March. Actors over 65, such as Bachchan, are banned from filming because of their vulnerability to complications from the virus.
