31 teams, 31 book recommendations – The Athletic


It’s Sports Book Week at Athletic – not the kind of betting, but a celebration of the writing and the fun of snuggling up with fleshy reading. (Or, perhaps, while sitting on a cold ice rink.) To start, we suggested a task for our NHL screenwriters: provide a book recommendation on the team you’re covering. We have replicated this project with our editors from the NBA, NFL, MLB, college football, men’s college basketball and women’s basketball.

On the NHL side, the choices resulted in a gold medal (“The Game”, by Ken Dryden), some compilations (“100 things” that fans of a team should know was popular), but also unusual playlists that hockey fans may want to add to their playlists. Books written by Athletic staff members are marked with an asterisk


And we couldn’t publish that, of course, without asking for some sort of book discussion. What are your favorite NHL books? What are you doing…
