UPDATE, refresh to last: As expected, the 2020 Venice Film Festival competition lineup is light on studio titles with only Searchligh Nomadland and Sony The world to come understand. Both are led by women (Chloe Zhao and Mona Fastvold, respectively) in a much stronger year for filmmakers than in the past. Last year, Venice was criticized for having only two women competing while this year there are women behind eight of the 18 feature films. Venice chef Alberto Barbera said they had been “selected exclusively on the basis of their quality and not because of gender protocols”.Overall, there is a very global / art house feel to the main lineup of the first major international film gathering since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Among the well-known directors around the world is the French Nicole Garcia with Lovers, Amos Gitai from Israel with Laila in Haifa, The English language of Kornel Mundruczo Pieces of a womanand the Italian Gianfranco Rosi with Night.

It’s still unclear whether talent will be able to attend, given border restrictions and general concerns. We already know that NomadlandZhao and star Frances McDormand will be in attendance virtually. Pieces of a woman and The world to come Star Vanessa Kirby could be as ubiquitous on the Lido as Nicole Kidman has sometimes been in Cannes if she shows up for her two competitive titles. Pieces of a woman also features Shia LaBeouf and Sarah Snook while The world to come co-stars Casey Affleck.

Well Sofia Coppola On the rocks had been rumored (and could still figure out as Barbera said he was likely to add more titles), it was his niece Gia Coppola who returned to Venice with the title Horizons Courant dominant, with Andrew Garfield, Maya Hawke, Nat Wolff and Jason Schwartzman.

Quirky French director Quentin Dupieux makes an out-of-competition appearance with Mandibles, directed by Adèle Exarchopoulos while Notting Hill coxswain Roger Michell is also in the out-of-competition section with The Duke. Helen Mirren, Jim Broadbent, and Fionn Whitehead star in the comedy based on the true story of a 60-year-old taxi driver who stole the Duke of Wellington’s portrait of Goya from the National Gallery in 1961.

Refresh to last…: The Venice Film Festival unveils its programming for the 77th edition this morning in Rome. It will be the first major international film event to take place physically since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, and will be held from September 2 to 12 on the Lido. Cate Blanchett is this year president of the main jury of the competition. Fest chef Alberto Barbera will be writing the roster in the next hour, so check back for updates when we post the headlines live below.

The world’s oldest film festival has solidified its status as a launching pad for award hopefuls in recent years, although given the current state of the world, this year should be somewhat dampened by the lack of headlines. Hollywoods available and since travel restrictions may still be in place at the start of September. On Monday, it was revealed that Searchlight Pictures (who has a solid background on the Lido) will premiere Chloe Zhao. Nomadland September 11, simultaneously with Toronto. However, Zhao and star Frances McDormand will be in attendance virtually. Sofia Coppola A24-Apple photo On the rocks is another American title that was recently announced as a potential for the event.

As reported last week, Daniele Luchetti laces will open the debates, a first for an Italian film in over a decade. Documentary by Venetian director Andrea Segre Molecules, made in Venice when locked, will screen as the pre-opening night film on September 1.

In early July, the organizers in Venice presented some changes due to the health protocols imposed by the COVID crisis. The total number of films in the official selection has been reduced, while the competitive sections will retain their usual procedures and format, as will the Out of Competition section and the Biennale College Cinema – although social distancing will be enforced.
