The company’s CEO, Eric Yuan, has explained that the Zoom is intended to exclude free calls end-to-end encryption to ensure that it is always possible to “work with the FBI, with local law enforcement in the case where some people use Zoom for a bad object”.
But “the basic safety, should not be a premium feature that is only available to high net worth individuals and large companies,” Evan Greer, the deputy director of the digital rights advocacy group Fight for the Future, said at the time.
Zoom changed its decision after having spoken with civil liberties organizations, child safety advocates, encryption experts, government representatives, and users, the Yuan said in a news release announcing the change. The encryption features will be available from July.
The video platform has exploded in popularity after coronavirus related to these prohibitions, and is trying to see as much as 300 million users per day, compared with only $ 10 million in December.
During this time, he struggled with whether encryption may obscure the identity of users and adversely affect its ability to enforce security measures on the application. Zoom has been confronted to prosecute cases of “Zoom-bombing”, in which the trolls are attacking the users on the application with insults and disturbing images. Zoom added security measures in response.
To address these concerns, while allowing for encryption and privacy, Zoom will require free users to register using a phone number to receive a text message verification.
Zoom previously falsely announced himself as the use of end-to-end encryption and, once caught, has confirmed in a blog post that end-to-end encryption has not been possible on the platform.
The meetings use a different style of encryption by default. For more privacy, guests will have to manually enable the function of end-to-end encryption. The hosts of Zoom will be able to turn the encryption on and off depending on the meeting.
“We encourage everyone to continue to share their points of view throughout this complex, ongoing process,” Yuan said.
