WWE backstage recap: CM Punk returns, Bret Hart joins the show

Welcome to tonight’s live coverage of Wrestling Inc. Behind the scenes of WWE on FS1, with CM Punk returning to the panel.WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart is this week’s special guest. As noted, WWE universal champion Braun Strowman was scheduled for tonight, but could not appear.

– Tonight begins with Renee Young and CM Punk chatting with WWE Hall of Famer’s special guest, Bret Hart.

– Regarding the 1996 Survivor Series, Hart talks about taking on Steve Austin, said he was anxious and intense during their games. Thought his Survivor series match was tied with their WrestleMania 13 match, said it was difficult to find ways to get past this previous match. Said he felt like he was hit by a train in the months after the game, says you never feel it during the game.

– Punk says he and Hart are friends, and Punk even admits he’s nervous talking to Bret (then shows his Bret Hart shirt). Punk asks Bret to tell Vince McMahon that he needs to get Steve Austin. Hart said he felt like Austin had a Rick Rude vibe, the same intensity and always wanted to improve. He felt that Austin was climbing the ranks in his WCW performances. Then he went to ECW and Hart told Vince he couldn’t believe WWE let him go. Shortly after WWE brought him after, Hart felt like he had “shaken the tree a little.”

Punk tells how Hart called Austin the “best wrestler in the world” long before his popularity peaked and most fans knew his skills. Punk asks if Austin was his best dance partner in the ring. Hart talks about having great chemistry with a few guys: M. Perfect, Shawn Michaels and Austin. Hart felt like Austin really found his voice and style after their Survivor series game. Hart talks about Randy Orton against Edge, didn’t think it was the biggest game ever because there was no audience and this is a crucial part of the fight. Said it’s hard to choose the biggest because it changes from time to time. I thought the match was awesome, nice match, reminded him of a tennis match he came and went.

Renee brings Bret to speak with Edge before his match with Orton. Bret says he grew up imagining he was in the front row and looking at himself as a wrestler, so what would he like to see if he got in the front row. Edge texted him after and said it helped him against Orton. Punk talks 1994 Slam summer PPV and Bret against Owen Hart in a steel cage. Feels like the big blue cage provided a similar limitation, like not having a live audience, but the best wrestlers “will make chicken salad with chicken -“. Punk noted that he was live in the crowd and thanked Bret for such a powerful match as he entered a wrestling career. Bret said the bars were dangerous and difficult to work with, could split the back of the head simply by running the ropes.

– Booker T and Mark Henry of the WWE Hall of Famers join Punk and Young.

– Clips broadcast on WWE TV this week. The panel talks about Christian on RAW. Henry said he was worried about Christian exploding and having a heart attack. Booker said he was done, Christian had a good concert and it was stupid to go against Orton. Punk jokes, he wasn’t supposed to be on the show, but Christian went to get kicked in the head.

– “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” was coming. Mark Henry says he appreciated that they achieved the greatest movement successes, but that wouldn’t have bothered them with a referee hump and a few other “bells and whistles.” Booker says they went there and did a great job. Punk says Edge and Orton should ignore the billing for their game, it’s way too subjective. I felt like they had a good game, but he saw better games from the two guys. Felt it was unnecessary pressure, especially on Edge. Young mentions that Edge suffered a torn triceps during the match.

– The panel talks about Dominick eliminating Seth Rollins on this week’s RAW. Punk says the fact that he’s “green” actually helps with the script, but he needs to put in a little more when he’s going after someone. Booker and Henry mention how they remember his run around the restaurant business and how he is out there on WWE TV.

– Booker T and Renee continue to talk with Hart about their WCW days. Bret says Booker was one of the first guys he really wanted to work with in the ring, but WCW never managed to handle that story, despite a few games together. Hart talks about having so much momentum by leaving WWE and going to WCW, but they just didn’t capitalize on that. Hart says he went to Eric Bischoff several times with guys he wanted to face, but he was always given lame reasons why he couldn’t face someone. As he has done in the past, he called WCW an “s – show”. Hart mentions that Goldberg kicked him in the head, which led to the end of his career, Hogan also called a lot of shots in WCW. Booker says how great it was to get into the ring with Hart.

– Illustrated clips of AJ Styles defeating Daniel Bryan to win the WWE IC title. Punk says that on paper, he was excited to watch it, but was unable to fully enter the match. He felt that not having people in the crowd hurt the match, so that the wrestlers could discharge electricity into the building. Structurally / fundamentally, he couldn’t say anything bad. Henry was really tenacious about the match, saying that they have huddled together and will feel it in the next few days. I was really impressed with what they did in the ring.

– Next week: 7 p.m. ET – Royal rumble 2008 on FS1 before In the wings 11 p.m. ET.
